We've been very busy over here at the Nowak household. Leah is in full-on Christmas mode. She loves the "socks" that are hung by our chimney with care and thoroughly enjoys gazing at the various ornaments on our tree. Lele has been melting hearts all over town with her spontaneous greetings to anyone who will listen. During last weekend's trip to the mall with Daddy she wished everyone she saw "Merry Christmas" and would even follow it up with a "Happy Holidays!" Yesterday we attended a Cookie Exchange with some of our friends and had a blast. We also discovered that Leah's sugar intake does need to be carefully monitored. Sensitive tummy + sugar rush = Mommy's worst nightmare.
I had the girls all dressed up for the cookie exchange. As a result I had to take a picture of Aislin in the adorable little beret and sweater dress my friend Kari gave to Leah when she was born. Aislin is really starting to blossom. She gots lots of compliments on her cute little chin and chubby cheeks. Aisy is really starting to smile a lot and loves to coo and kick at the fish and sea horse on her bouncy seat. We've even dubbed a song on the bouncy seat's mix "Aislin's Theme." The girl likes her music and when the seat shuts off she gets very upset. She needs to hear her tunes!
We are looking forward to a great holiday and we can't wait to share our two favorite gifts, Leah and Aislin, with our family and friends!

For Daddy
I don't really have time to be blogging...there are a MILLION other things I need to be doing..but Pete loves this picture and I wanted to share it with you all. I know I'm biased, but isn't this little girl lovely? Look at her mouth...it's so sweet. And her eyes, well...they are special. Leah's baby blues have always had that huge, bright, sun-shiny, wide look filled with curiousity, mischief, fun and delight. Did I use enough adjectives for you there?
Aislin's eyes are still that slate blue color. They are like the deepest and most remote part of the ocean...almost black in color. They are big, soulful, and expansive. Her eyes seem to take in everything around her while emitting expression and emotion at the same time. I finally feel like I am getting to know who this little girl is and her eyes are the key to that. I can't wait to see who this little one turns out to be!
Aislin had her two month appointment today and she's doing well at 11 lbs and 7 oz. She's growing in length and head circumference and overall she's coming along fine. Except for a rashy behind (what's new with this kid?) and some cradle cap (can we say sensisitive skin?)...she's perfect.
I made this post especially for Pete because it seems we barely get to speak anymore. We're always tag-teaming the kids...me with one, him with the other. By the time we crawl in to bed there's no time for talking...just sleep! In fact in the doctor's office today he asked me about the particulars of my weekend. I was shocked to realized there were huge chunks we had not discussed. Regardless, Pete is my hero. He drove to Ohio on Saturday and back on Sunday to be there for his friend Rob on his wedding day. He had a great time by the way. He also tried to make his trip as short as possible knowing I was exhausted and that a weekend alone with an 8 week old and 23 month old is no walk in the park (He also missed those girls like crazy!). He spent his lunch hour with me at the pediatrician today just so he could personally hear that his baby is doing fine. He is in awe of his daughters and makes me feel so blessed that I get to care for them each and every day.
So this one is for Daddy...this is his favorite picture of late and I can see why. That face melts my heart too and it looks so much like Pete's at times (but prettier :) Now that she's here, I can't imagine our family without Aisy.

Big Cookie + Balloon= Do I have to sit on that guy's lap?
I thought this perfectly captured Leah's love-hate relationship with Santa. After some thought I can see why she's a little afraid. She doesn't know the man, so why should she sit on his lap? A healthy dose of fear never hurt anyone...in fact I believe there's actually a book about how it saves peoples' lives. In a way I'm sort of glad she likes the Santa she reads about in books and sees in illustrations better than the few she's met in her two short years. I want her to have her own ideas and dreams about what the Christmas season is and what it means to her.
But why even give Santa the time of day when you can eat a huge cookie with your trusty balloon friend tied to your wrist. She ate two of those cookies by the way and crashed hard from the sugar rush later that day. The dress she's wearing here is affectionately called "The Lemmy Dress" becuase it contains little gray cats just like our Lemmy! I only wish Pete and I felt so affectionately about Lemmy these days. We love her, but like her almost two year old housemate, that cat likes to test limits and challenge authority lately. It's like a demented "The Real World." Anyway...the holidays are off to a fun start. Leah loves the tree and plays with the little figures in her manger scene. We're working on keeping her from touching the tree (Look with your eyes! Not with your hands!)...I can see it falling on her in one of her challenge authority moments if you catch my drift! There's some snow on the ground. And we'll be baking our own Christmas cookies soon. I know Leah can't wait to experience it all! Just look at the childlike wonder (or maybe that's just plain Santa fear!) in her eyes...

Sisterly Love
I took this shot a few weeks ago before Aislin had rubbed off a bunch of that hair. I can always tell where she's been resting her head these days. There's usually a little wreath of black hair around the indent where her big melon was. A week from today we head to the doctor for her 2 month check up. I can hardly believe it's here! Whew...time flies especially fast when you've got two very vocal and highly energetic girls.
They stil enjoy playing with each other like they are in this shot. Note the array of stickers Leah has all over her pajama top. Hey, a mom's gotta do, what a mom's gotta do, to keep the peace...you know? leah LOVES stickers and balloons as well. Seriously, her love for balloons is so intense...it's not natural! Needless to say she thoroughly enjoyed the children's christmas party thrown by Pete's company this weekend. I'll be sure to post pictures sometime this week. She's still afraid of Santa though. I couldn't even get her to pose with the jolly old elf...even if he did give her a candy cane for each hand (she's SUCH a scam artist!!!). A few Santa tears were easily cured with a present, a balloon, and two gigantic christmas cookies. Oh yes, and of course the candy canes! More to come this week...

How sweet is she?
I was looking at some pics from the past weekend and had to share one of our latest addition. I know Aislin looks like a little old man here, but c'mon...isn't she still just so cute? And I love the little dress she's wearing! It was Clare's when she was a newborn and it's decorated with adorable little goldfish. Aisy was sharing a moment with Grandpa here on Thanksgiving night when I snapped this shot.
Aislin is having a lot more wakeful time these days. She's still struggling with a lot of tummy trouble, but we're trying a few different measures to get her through this fussy and difficult time.I've started using a few different holds when feeding her and I'm working to try and help her suck in less air when she eats. I've also started stepping up my use of the mylecon drops which seems to be helping as well, and a few people have recommended "gripe water" to me (another anti-colic remedy). Aisy is definitely giving me and Pete a run for our money in the crying department, but I just try to remember that this all usually fades by 12 weeks. She's so different from Leah as a newborn, but then again I'm a different Mom now too. Aislin is a tough cookie, but sensitive as well. What a special little girl!

Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba!
Today's header isn't nonsense...it's the lead in to "Circle of Life." It was a VERY busy weekend with lots of welcoming Aislin into our world and family. Thanksgiving was a blast with Grammy and Pa. The rest of the crew came in on Friday and Saturday for Aisy's baptism. We managed to fit in a trip to the zoo with the Leah and Clare. My very talented friend Jen made Aislin the most out of this world cake to celebrate her big day and Devon's fiance Mike even got himself some Dinosuar BBQ (smart man...), so everyone got a little taste of Syracuse.
Aislin was an angel as Fr. Fred poured about a gallon of water on her head. As you can see from the shot, he also had Pete hold Aisy up for everone to see. It was great and at the risk of sounding cheesy you could truly feel the love her family, friends, and community all have for her. As her godmother Devon remarked it was just like when they present Simba to the world in the Lion King. We all got a kick out of that.
Leah cheered "yay!!!!!!" loudly every time a song finished during the service and Clare came down with a fever right about the same time...poor thing. The girls loved seeing each other and can't wait to get together again. More posts and pics to come soon...

Teeth and Tails
I had a moment of quiet victory this morning when I FINALLY got Leah to keep elastics in her hair! I believe my success is due to the fact that her hair is now long enough for pigtails. She seemed flummoxed by having two tails to deal with (as in"which one do I try to pull out? This one? Wait! No, what about this one over here?...") I also told Leah "Daddy can't wait to see your hair when he gets home!" and that pretty much sealed the deal. I think she likes to impress Daddy and I'm certain he will be impressed. I mean the pigtails are pretty darn cute.
In other news I think our 1 month old is cutting a tooth! I know it sounds crazy...at first I just thought it was some leftover milk on her gums, but I've been keeping an eye on the little tooth bud just in case it really is a tooth. Well...last night and today it has been getting whiter and whiter. Today I can actually see little ridges. I showed my neighbor Jacque and she said it looked like a tooth to her too. Like she said "stranger things have happened."
I don't know much about teeth and it's been tough to find info online about teething in a child this young, so if anyone out there is a dental professional or has any experience with this, feel free to leave a comment. I'd love to hear what you have to say. One thing I did read is that, although rare, it is possible for a kid to sprout a tooth this young...so I guess I'm not completely crazy. I guess this also explains Aislin's "angry" demeanor (even if Auntie K said she had a really cute cry today). I also read that it's possible for these very early teeth to recede (Does this mean I have to go through the teething process twice for this tooth?).
Anyway...for a boring, old, cloudy day at home we have made our own excitement. Who knew teeth and hair could be so thrilling?? OK...maybe I am completely crazy. Have a great day!

Mad World
This was taken during Aislin's first bath. Leah was helping to dry off "baby sister's" hair (9 times out of 10 Leah calls Aisy "baby" or "baby sister" but every once in a while she'll actually use the kid's name). I'm sure you've noticed that Aislin really seems to be enjoying her spa treatment in this photo. As one of the pediatrician's nurses said to me the other day "babies don't like all that manipulation." This is especialy true for Aisy. She HATES having her diaper changed. Forget about trying to change her clothes she doesn't like that either. Putting her in the car seat? Get ready for some serious crying. And let me tell you...the girl has got some lungs on her.
Aislin is very sweet, but when she's mad...she's really MAD. An she lets you know it. The Moms at MOPS were all admiring her "pout" this morning, another Aislin way of letting us know she's displeased. The other Moms all said I need to get a picture of it...since it's too cute. Cute...right...
At least the pout gives you some time to start attending to her needs before the banshee screaming starts. She's good like that. And when we are not manipulating her...she is a total peach. She sleeps well and eats pretty good...although she's a bit noisy. The other night she was so loud that Pete asked "Geez! Is she nursing or eating BBQ ribs???"
Lip smackin' good!!! Just like our Aislin.

These Eyes...
Whenever visitors see Aislin with her eyes open they get so excited. Yesterday my friend Cynthia was happy to see a bright eyed Aislin while she visted with her son Beckett who is the same age as Leah. Cyn also knitted the girls the sweetest little pumpkin hats. Believe me...they will be featured in a future post. They are adorable!
Speaking of adorable, I love this shot of Pete and Aisy. I took this at least a week ago but she still looks pretty much the same...maybe a little bigger. Pete was using his finger (ala Mike Myers in "So I Married an Axe Murderer") to move Aislin's lips so she could "talk." They had a very deep conversaition I'm sure. Anyway, I chose this shot because I thought you guys might enjoy seeing Aislin's eyes too. They're a pretty, dark, slate blue color (I think I can even see some brown in there) and they compliment her hair nicely. Aislin has been having lots more awake time these days and is enjoying her bouncy seat. When she's not eating or struggling to poop, she LOVES listening to people talk. This makes her the perfect companion for her Mommy and sister! This is Halloween!
Here's a shot of Leah in her kangaroo costume. She made out like a bandit lastnight considering she only went to 8 houses. Apparently, "cute" gets you lots of candy. Mommy and Daddy confiscated the lion's share. I thoroughly enjoyed the snickers bar and reeses peanut butter cup I had while Pete and I watched the movie "The Break Up" (Isn't that a parent perk? Eating your toddler's halloween candy?). We do have a few pre-approved treats stashed in the cupboard for LeLe to have after meals and for emergency purposes.
It was rainy, but Leah was psyched to be out and about saying "trick-or-treat!" Pete isn't feeling well, but he was a trooper and took our little "joey" around the neighborhood. I watched from the window when Aislin wasn't crying or demanding to eat. It was a busy night, but very fun. Our neighborhood is very lively and we get lots of trick or treaters. So whether you're out haunting the streets like Pete and Le, or choose to stay in and hand out candy like me or our neighborhood friend Ella (had to give blog fan Ella a shout out there!), there's lots to see and do on halloween night. G'day mates from our little kangaroo!! We can't wait until next Halloween!

My tricky treats...
I would've posted a picture of the girls in all of their halloween glory but Aislin already pooped through her very festive outfit and it's in the washer as we speak. Luckily, Halloween is Auntie K's birthday so there were several holiday outfits from when Clare was a newborn. Aislin is wearing Round 2 now. Leah cannot wait to don her kangaroo costume tonight for her first ever attempt at Trick-or-Treating! Needless to say there will be LOTS of pictures taken and I will do my best to share them with you all as soon as possible!
Our babysitter Fran is back from vacation and came to see us today. Leah was so excited. Fran made a special effort to give Leah lots of attention and they were sure to hit the park on this balmy autumn day! I know Leah was thrilled to have a few moments without her new sister around. Overall, Leah has been handling our new arrival very well (as you can see from this picture). It's been tricky...figuring out how to deal with these two unique and powerful personalities. But it has also been a treat! Two daughters....life is twice as sweet. Happy Halloween! And Happy B-day K!

Back to Birth Weight!
Aislin is finally back to her birth weight of 9 lbs. 7 oz. We just got back from the Pediatrician who said she looked good. Her color is coming along nicely and she looks a lot less jaundiced. It's pretty much just her face and eyes that look yellow now. But even so, they are a lot less orange than they were when we began this journey.
Her umbilical stump has fallen off and while there were questions on how it was healing, the doctor said that looked good as well. I too could see an improvement since Aislin's last exam on Tuesday. We're working through the diaper rash and Aislin should be the picture of health in no time.
I really like this picture of new addition. She has a concerned sort of look on her face (check out the eye brows), but she was sleeping so sweetly I couldn't resist snapping the shot. Leah has been asking to "Hold it?!" whenever she'd like to hold Aislin. It's adorable. LeLe nestles herself right into the corner of the couch and waits patiently for me to get Aislin and place the baby in her arms. If only Leah were so patent with other things in life. Anyway...that's what's up in our little world. We hope things are going well in your world too.

Home Alone
So, we've been doing pretty well our first few days at home on our own...just the Nowak girls. It's a little crazy at times and I don't forsee there being any sort of schedule in the next week or two. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and everyday an item or two falls into place. I can see that eventually life will run a bit more smoothly. Or as smoothly as it can run with two under two!
For example, I'll remember to change Leah before she goes down for a nap (yesterday she exceeded maximum capacity). And Aislin will at some point need less visits to the pediatrician. Pete's headed home for lunch to watch Leah while I take the baby for an impromptu examination of the crazy diaper rash she's got.
Sure, the TV is on a little more than I'd like (thank God for Noggin!) and we may not all be dressed until 10 AM, but It's what we can manage right now. Besides, I'm pretty proud we get dressed at all! Whenever possible I grab little moments with each girl. Bye, Bye, Grammy!
I'm not sure who was more distraught as Grammy headed home to New Paltz today, but I know everyone was sad to see her go. Grammy had tears in her eyes and Leah woke up from her nap wondering where Grammy and Pa were. Pete and I will miss all the help, but we're set for food this week. Mom made a roast chicken, a ham, split pea soup, stew, and she bought the items needed for us to make chili. We'll be eating in style for a while! Leah also had a blast baking with Grammy. They made pumpkin-chocolate muffins, cranberry bread, and a batch of pumpkin muffins too. Leah loves to mix the batter while Grammy sings the "mixing song."
Before I change the blog over to more fully include both my little "sugar hiccups," I had to get in one more shot of my big girl!!! I have been busy printing out all of the pages from our first post until now, to put in a binder for Leah to keep one day. Being a Mom to Leah, and now to Aislin, has changed me forever. It has caused me to grow and change in ways I did not know were possible. At the same time, each day I remember and learn from my own girlhood and experience the joy I felt being a kid.
My Mom taught Leah how to make a tent between the couch and ottoman and shared with her the thrill of playing with a flashlight. Leah's hooked! And had a blast playing with her animals and enjoying a tea party with them by the flashlight's glow. We'll miss you Grammy and we can't wait to see you again soon!

Getting better...
Well, the pediatrician discontinued the use of the bili blanket yesterday. We need to keep an eye on Aislin's skin and it may take a while for her to get back to her normal color (thanks to that ABO incompatibility), but otherwise she is doing well. It has been a real challenge having our newborn hooked up to a machine. It's considered "portable" but it never really felt that way. Efforts to move her from couch to pack n' play were pretty cumbersome and in an effort to keep her on the blanket 24 hours a day, Pete and I took turns sleeping in the living room with her. Not the most comfortable of accomodations to say the least.
Thankfully my Mom has been here with us to help wrangle Leah, and my MOPS friends mobilized and generously supplied us with 4 amazing meals since we came home with Aislin. My neighbors have brought me food, cake, coffee, and little gifts. Flowers came from Pete's Mom and his office and cards have been filling our mailbox.
As you can see from the picture, Aislin is thrilled to be so loved and welcome into our lives. Sure, it's just a gassy smile on her face, but I'm pretty sure that's the way she feels. I'm a little nervous for next week when I'll be alone with these two girls, but I suppose I'll rise to the occassion. Even if I am sleep deprived and a little overwhelmed. We'll keep you posted!

Aislin Update
Our October baby is a shade too pumpkin. We took Aislin to the pediatrician yesterday since she was starting to look jaundiced as we were discharged from the hospital. After our appointment we were sent back to the hospital for a quick bilirubin test. This one was rough. The poor thing...her feet have been so poked, prodded and pricked at this point from sugar tests, blood tests, and the newborn screening.
We also learned at the pediatrician that sometimes there are maternal-fetal incompatibility of blood types. This occurs most commonly when the mother is type O (that's me!) and her baby is A, B, or AB. Well, they tested that as well and Aislin is Pete's blood type...A. So there is some in compatability there. It doesn't seem to be too big a deal but symptoms in newborns can include prolonged jaundice and elevated bilirubin levels. Exactly what we're dealing with!
To help Aislin along we got a device called a "bili blanket" sent to our house by the pediatrician so that we can get her bilirubin levels down and get rid of that jaundice. I had to snap a picture of our latest addition soaking up that blue sun!!! We try to keep it on her as often as possible but it's tough. Leah is very concerned, but has been a big help. Aislin Elizabeth is here!
It's been a whirlwind week. It all started at 2:42 am Monday morning. That's when I started counting contractions. About 20 minutes (and A LOT of pain later) I woke up Pete and told him we'd better mobilize. We packed and at 3:45 am we called the doctor. Since the contractions had been less than 4 minutes apart for more than an hour he told us to come to the hospital.
Lucky for us, Pete's Mom had been visiting with us for the weekend and was staying over until Monday morning! Perfect, we didn't need to wake any of our neighbors and friends with a really late night call to come over ad watch Leah. We called my parents who started heading towards Syracuse and we were off to the hospital. We got there at about 4:15 am and checked in. The contractions were so rough I practically sat on the admission person's desk ("get me to labor and delivery!!!"). Once we were upstairs the resident examined me while we waited for the doctor.
Much to my, and to everyone else's, surprise I was 8 cm dilated!!! Too late for an epidural! When they told me that...I almost cried, and I did say "I don't think I can do this!" The nurses and resident assured me(as they scrambled to get that room ready for delivery faster than anything I've ever seen in my life!) that I could. After all, I had done much of the work already at home with no pain medication. The resident also mentioned that at 8 lbs.,15 oz....Leah had already blazed a pretty good trail and she doubted this baby would be that big at 2 1/2 weeks early (boy were we wrong!). Things were progressing fast. We didn't even have a chance to finish the admission questions and paperwork before I had to start pushing!
Once Dr. Bebla arrived my water broke and the party got started. I started pushing at 5:15 and less than 10 minutes later, at 5:24 am Aislin Elizabeth was here...all NINE POUNDS, SEVEN OUNCES of her (can you tell I'm just a little proud of myself for doing this naturally?). Pete was amazing support and the best cheerleader I could have asked for.
Once again meconium accompanied this birth, as with Leah's. I know...what are the chances of that?! Aislin was suctioned out with no problem. But she had swallowed a lot of amniotic fluid, which makes for a pretty mucous-filled baby. I got to hold her right after she was born, Pete got to cut the cord, and we snatched a few cuddles with her before she was taken to the NICU (more on that in the entry below). She left the hospital today after losing only 5 ounces so she's still large and in charge at 9lbs, 2 ounces today.
We chose her Irish name, Aislin, which means "dream" or "vision" in Gaelic. It seems to fit her perfectly. She is a mellow, sweet, and dreamy girl...who already has a perfected pout (which cracked the NICU nurses up!) and is already being put to good use on her Daddy. Just look at that face. Leah's a big Sister!
Leah and Grammy were here to welcome Aislin home today. As you can tell, Leah is a fantastic big sister, who is soooo excited to have a new member of our family with us. Pete snapped this picture of "his girls" at the hospital when Grandma, Grammy, and Pa were all there with LeLe to meet our latest addition. Big props to all 3 grandparents who have been such a help and blessing during this exciting and crazy time.

Her grandparents were able to visit her in the NICU and Pete and I were able to spend time with her there as well. I was even able to feed her some formula. Bad Hiccups

I had to giggle when this quote appeared on a MOPS email I received today. Apparently, Leah has no aversion to salami...she just had a really NASTY stomach virus. I know, because I caught it! After a night of being the sickest I've ever been (that's not even taking into acount my being 9 months pregnant) I started having contractions. Pete and I spent Sunday morning in the labor and delivery unit, where they rehydrated me via IV and got the contractions to stop. Leah enjoyed the day at my neighbor Sue's house and was delighted to be with the big kids. Seriously...it was as if she hardly knew we were gone!
When we got home Leah and I both went down for naps. Leah was perfectly fine on Saturday and Sunday morning, but this bug wouldn't die and she woke up from her nap on Sunday cranky. Pete soon discovered that Leah's use of the phrase "bad hiccup" or just the word "hiccup" accompanied by a scared and concerned look on her face means "I'm about to puke on you and anything else within range!" Poor Pete.
We gave LeLe a bath and called my Mom who came up Sunday night to help me get through Monday. I am so lucky to have so many friends and family members who are here for me during this time. Unfortunately, the bug got Mom too...and Grammy spent yesterday back in New Paltz pretty sick. Yikes!!! Sometimes all the handwashing in the world can't keep the petrie dish of germs that is a toddler down!
I thought I would share this shot of Leah in the orchard, since she appears to be the picture of health here. Just look at that physique!! Too cute. Hey, at least my visit to the hospital was a sign to slow it down (I'm working on it...I swear!). I'm going to bet it's a good thing that we are getting this out of our system before the baby arrives.

I feel like I'm fallin' for Fall!
Nothing like a weekend blog to surprise your web friends come Monday morning! I had a minute while Pete puts Leah down for a nap, so I thought I would grab the moment and share this sweet photo with you. While apple picking last weekend, Leah really enjoyed the hayride portion of our journey. On the other hand, I thought I might go into labor! That hayride sure was bumpy! But my worries were diminished by Leah's excitement. Like most toddlers, LeLe is a sponge and it's thrilling to watch her take everything in. It's like she's learning through all 100% of her waking hours AND having fun at the same time!
We had an interesting Friday yesterday, and this time it was Mommy's turn to learn a little something. Yes people, a 21 month old can have too much genoa salami and too many crackers. Here I thought I was being zen and going with the flow, when Leah asked for salami, cheese and crackers for both lunch and dinner Thursday. As toddlers go, Leah is a great eater. I mean...how many 1 year olds are out there requesting salami, black beans, or peas? She likes most everything we put in front of her, but as with most kids she can get finicky about what she eats and the quantity from time to time.
She hadn't been eating well Wed. or Thurs., so I was just happy to get some food in her, even if it was only salami and crackers. Well all that fat and sodium proved too much for her system I guess, and the poor kid got pretty sick. I won't regale you with the nauseating (literally!) details. Leah may know best when it comes to how her tummy feels (that's probably why she was fussy and refusing to eat in the first place), but I now realize that too much of anything is not a good idea...especially when that thing is salami! From now on I'll try to be Zen and sensible at the same time.

Party Girl
Wednesdays, especially MOPS Wednesdays, are great for blogging. Leah gets tuckered out from playing and usually takes a decent nap allowing me to write. I'm tired myself today though and probably need a nap too so I'll be brief. As I mentioned in the previous post LeLe had a great time at Clare's party. In this shot Leah enjoys her cream cheese and jelly sandwich which was thoughtfully cut into the shape of a bear by Auntie K. Clare's nickname is Clare Bear and that was reflected in the entire styling of the event (go Kathleen!!!). The kids brought their bears to play with, there were bear sandwiches, and of course a special little bear cake just for the birthday girl. Leah surprised me by getting into the spirit of things and wearing her party hat! Leah does not like to wear head and hair related accessories, but the paper party hat was a big hit! I had to laugh. Enjoy the day everyone!

Partyin' and Pickin'
We had a great time this weekend at Clare Bear's first birthday party. It was non-stop action, but fun, fun, fun! Leah played hard, ate a ton, and slept like a champ for the most part. I'd say the big exception to that last claim was the final hour of our ride home, when she mashed a fruit snack in her hair and pretty much yelled for her Grandmas until we pulled in the driveway. Pete got the fruitsnack out with some olive oil and a hairwashing, which was good thinking, although Leah could've used an additional lather, rinse and repeat cycle. She's quite the little greaseball today...
More on Clare's party in the next week. I've got some great shots. Most involve the girls getting their play on or Leah shoveling sandwiches and cupcakes into her face. While visiting we also managed to sneak in a trip to a local apple farm down the street from of Grammy and Pa's house. Leah enjoyed her first hayride, had a blast running through the orchard, and loved biting into all the random apples she found lying around. The warm but rainy weather didn't seem to get her down for a minute. As for me...it's good to be back home. I am ready to hunker down, nest and prepare for Kid X. There is lots of work to be done, but nothing soooo important that I can't make some time to bake an apple crumble or eat some apple pie. Besides...isn't that part of what this whole nesting thing is all about?

The Park
My daughter loves the park. Yet another facet of her personality that is different from mine. Don't get me wrong, I like the park too...just not the way Leah does. Climbing EVERYTHING in sight, trying new death-defying tricks (and I do mean death-defying!!!) at every turn, running, shouting, exploring, loving, being....that's Leah at the park. It's hard for a nearly 9 month pregnant woman to get that energized about even the most outrageously thriling aspects of life.
I like Lincoln Park in Chicago. Me, alone on a blanket, with a book to read or watercolors to paint with. I would listen to my favorite music (No "Dora" or "Pooh and the Heffalumps Too" CDs here!!!), with an expanse of blue sky and Lake Michigan sprawled before me and the towering comfort of buildings and skyscrapers crowded behind me. Sure...those days are gone and probably for the better. It did get to be a little lonely at times (a problem I am rarely faced with now!), but I do enjoy taking a trip down memory lane every once in a while.
Someday maybe I'll share some of my favorite parks with Leah. I took Pete to Davenport Park in New Rochelle once. A windy sheet of grass on the Long Island Sound where my Dad used to take us to fly kites. There's Hudson Park, now Clare's local hang out, where I had MANY a picnic or play date as a kid. Of course there is the urban oasis of Bryant Park in NYC...host to fashion week and sprinkled with chairs where you can eat your lunch on a nice day. I visited Waterplace Park and Riverwalk nearly every week when I worked in Providence, RI. I would love to take Leah and her soon-to-be sibling to WaterFIre someday, an almost weekly event during the summer and early fall, where the river is lit with beautiful bonfires. I know many of the friends and family who visited Pete and I when we lived in RI remember WaterFire.
For now, it's Pete who is "Park Parent." And I am thankful for that. Leah and Daddy hit the playground as often as possible and it really does seem to be a favorite activity for the two of them. Pete snapped this picture of her on a recent visit. These days a trip to the park for those two means a nap for Mommy. I couldn't ask for a better treat or gift! Someday I will share with Leah all the peaceful park settings that have inspired me and afforded me much relaxation over the years. And I look forward to Leah showing me the best slides, secret hiding spots, and open spaces for running and playing. She is a bundle of joy (literally!!!!). What will the next one be like?

Mergirls and MOPS days
Today is rainy! rainy! rainy! And while it's a bit colder here than it was on the Jersey shore it is giving me little flashbacks to our vacation. This shot is one flashback I don't mind having though. Leah looks a little serious, but don't let her fool you...these two ladies had a lot of fun at the playground. I'd bet that their parents even had a little fun too. Leah kept chanting "ice cream! ice cream!" all the way to the park that day...so after playing hard we hit town for some frozen custard. Mmmm.....
Today was our first day of the new MOPS season. I had a blast seeing friends and relaxing without Leah for a bit and Leah had a blast it seems in the one year old room. She barely noticed me as I walked out to head to the meeting (gotta love that!), she was too busy exploring all the new toys. On the other hand she threw a fit when it was time to go home. What can I say...the girl is a SOCIAL BUTTERFLY! She expresses more separation anxiety here at home when I leave our living room to go two feet away to the kitchen. Good to be home!
Well, life here at home seems to be settling back into the old routine. It's nice! Fran's usual Tuesday visit was much welcomed by Leah this morning and the two quickly headed to the park. I had an appt. and a billion errands to run (MUCH easier to do sans toddler!!), but I got the rundown from Fran...they fed cheerios to the fish at the park, there was much sliding on Leah's part (her favorite playground apparatus), Leah ate a ton for lunch, and went down for her nap like a charm! I know I've said it before, but Fran can clean my house in a way that I am just not capapble of (especially 8 months pregnant!)...so I was awfully glad to see her today as well. We traded our recent funny Leah stories when I got home. That girl loves to crack both Fran and I up, but I still love hearing all about the little things she does or says when I'm not around. Just look at this picture of her in a little newspaper hat my Mom made for her when we were away...isn't she getting so big??? I'm getting big as well (or at least my belly is!), so I'm tying up loose ends with work and then plan to nest and get ready for baby during the month of October. I can't wait!

Life's a Beach!
Another shot of my precious niece and daughter. They were both so sweet playing in the sand. This picture brings a much needed smile to my day. In addition to being achy, crippled and exhausted by this pregnancy (and wrangling Leah all day long), I finally got the comment my sister got while she was pregnant "I hope you're not going to have the baby here!!!" Yeah...I hope not either since I've still got 6-7 weeks to go! I'll spare you another tirade and instead just let you enjoy this photo. I love how hard at work Leah looks, poised and ready with her spade, hair blowing in the salty, sea air. Clare loved that little rake she's holding and had a great time exploring the sand as well. There's nothing like a picture of two little cuties to pick you up when you're feeling über prego and cranky. I can enjoy their beauty while also enjoying the silence of Leah's naptime! Aaahhhh...calgon, take me away!

Vacation
Well...I'm not sure who invited Ernesto on our delightful beach vacation, but next time he's going to have to sit it out. That goes for any other tropical storms or hurricanes as well. Most of you know Pete and I had a bit of a rainy honeymoon in the British Virgin Islands. Of course the locals kept saying "It NEVER rains like this here???" The locals on the Jersy Shore kept saying "it was beautiful last week!" I'm not sure, but I think that sort of attempt at conforting just makes visitors feel worse.
Anyway, we had a great time, despite the weather. It was good to spend time with family. Leah learned about 50 gazillion new words and loved every minute she got to spend with Clare. Here's a shot of the girls reading about the beach with Grammy. If you can't be there you might as well read about it right? We made a few attempts but it was never really "beach weather"...still, we tried! I also finally played the tables in Atlantic City and that was fun. Our proximity to AC was great, as it allowed us to get out and drown our sorrows with a little gambling and free drinks (mine were all gingerale of course!!).
Well I've got many more pictures to post so check back soon. We're sad that vacation and summer is over, but it's great to be back home and sleeping in our own beds!!! Besides, we have a TON to do to prepare for the new baby!

31 weeks and counting...
We have been pretty delinquent when it comes to blogging. Our visit with Nicolle was great and much needed (especially for me)! So I wanted to maximize my time with her which meant less time on the computer. Getting ready for our upcoming trip to the shore and for the fall in general (did the summer fly or WHAT?) has also kept us frighteningly busy. Add to that all the design work I've been trying to squeeze in before the baby comes (not to mention caring for a 20 month old) and it's pretty overwhelming. Thankfully we are going on vacation. I know I sorely need it! I am especially looking forward to actually breaking my camera out and getting creative. These days it feels like I spend all of my energies creating things for others, it will be nice to take pictures or paint a painting for myself. I think I'll leave my french easel at home this time...but I do plan on bringing some art supplies on this trip. We'll see what the outcome is.
I say this trip is "sorely" needed becuase I don't remember my third trimester with Leah being so rough. I am having a lot of pelvic/back pain and trouble walking and sleeping. Like with Leah, I am carrying very high. I'm also all up front. At least the random strangers who comment on my body seem to agree with me on that point. They've also all been insisting that I'm having a boy. And I do mean INSISTING. Last I checked the odds were still 50-50, even if the ultrasound tech did give me 90% chance of it being a girl. I decided to post a photo back from my first and only (so far) ultrasound with KidX...as you can see the legs are crossed. Hence the 90%. The baby's tummy is at the left edge and the legs go across the page with the ankles crossed and the feet pointing towards the right edge of the ultrasound.
I'm not ruling either possibility out, girl or boy, but I am getting a little tired of the comments. I enjoy hearing what my friends and family think. They relate their own personal stories with undertsanding and kindness. As for the strangers, I smile and nod. I also think to myself how weird it is that our culture finds it perfectly fine to tell a pregnant woman "Whoa! You're huge!" when we would never say that (I hope) to a non-pregnant woman we met on the street, in the grocery line, or at a salon.
Alright, sorry for the pregnant woman's rantings, but after getting another "are you sure it's not twins??" comment today I'm just feeling a little frustrated. I was on the way home from the OB when it hapened, but rather than say " I just measured perfectly at 31 weeks and yes, they're sure it's not twins." I decided to smile and nod, happy in the knowledge that I'll soon have the gift of another baby in my arms.
We'll blog more when we return after labor day. Check in with us then for LOTS of awesome pics of LeLe's first trip to the ocean!!!!

Cheesehead
Sorry we've been out of touch, but we have been having a great visit with our friend Nicolle! Nicolle was instrumental in getting Pete and myself together, and besides being my college roommate and best friend, she's also proven herself to be a big favorite with Leah.
Nic brought us all sorts of treats from her current hometown (though she's still a Jersey girl at heart) Madison, Wisconsin. Pete got a bottle of yummmy port wine, and I got all sorts of green tea bath products. We both recieved AMAZING chocolates from a local Madison chocolatier Gail Ambrosius and Leah scored herself a cute Madison T-shirt (with the capital building on it) and this adorable cheesehead hat. Needless to say, Leah loves wearing it and proudly exclaims "cheese!!!!" whenever we put it on her.
Of course Nicolle and I managed to hit Dinosaur BBQ for lunch one day and we made sure to get Nicolle her annual dose of upstate NY fare (pizza and wings). We took Leah to the zoo, which Nic really enjoyed. We've visited with some college friends, attended our neighorhood's yearly block party, did some shopping and we've watched a few movies. There have been several walks to the park (another Leah favorite!) and lots of time to just hang out and do what Nicolle and I do best...chat! It has been a restful and relaxing time. We'll be sad to see Nicolle leave bright and early on Thursday....

Tree Climber
I snapped this shot of Leah trying to climb a tree outside of her Grandma Nowak's house this weekend. We had a great time visiting with the entire Nowak/Moore clan! You know Leah is having fun based on the sweaty hair that's sticking to her face. Or maybe she's just really hot? Leah LOVES to explore the world around her! Trees, plants and especially animals! I love to watch her play.
Today, Leah went to swimming with Daddy, so that I could go and take the hour long gestational diabetes test and see the obstetrician. We also thought it would be a good chance for Leah to get used to swimming lessons with Daddy. Now that my Oct. due date draws near, Pete is going to take over as the parent half of our parent-tot class. Leah was tired from her exciting weekend and from waking up earlier than usual this morning, so Pete had his work cut out for him! Apparently she melted down a bit at the start of class, but Pete sounded like a trooper and handled it AMAZINGLY well! I appreciate all he does for us!
My appointment went fine. There was a little snafu with the computers at the lab, so they ended up drawing my blood about 10 minutes late. This first (and hopefully only!) GD test is timed for one hour, but the OB assured me there's a window...they just like to instill a little fear into patients so that they are certain to be there on time. Kid X is developing very nicely it seems and we can't wait for Leah's sibling to arrive this Fall!!!! Leah will no doubt be ready to teach the baby how to run, jump, play and "climb trees!"

Relief from the heat!
It has been hot here (much like it has been every where I think!) and Leah and I have been carefully choosing when to go out and when to stay inside with our comfy air conditioning. I thought this picture perfectly captured Leah's abilities to beat the heat! Not only does she LOVE playing in the water but she also loves drinking it (even if it's from a watering can!).
It has been a busy few weeks and this pregnancy and chasing a toddler around has me feeling exhausted! The weather probably doesn't help either. Unfortunately that means I haven't been able to blog as much as I'd like. I hope to get some pictures this weekend, and next week while my friend Nicolle is visiting. I'm sure it will be tough to find time to write, but I'll give it a try. I sincerely do love blogging and it's a great way to remind myself (especially on the many challenging and exhausting days that comprise toddlerhood)that I am blessed with the gift of spending each and every day with my spirited little girl Leah!

Sproutin'!
I'm sure every parent never stops being amazed by how fast their children grow. Leah seems to be changing with every single moment and she is FULL of surprises! Each day it seems she comes out with a new word. Last week I heard "hiccup," "shower," and "table" for the first time.
I thought this picture made her look so grown up. She actually let me get an elastic into her hair and kept it there for one magical half-hour. I tried for two, one pony on each side, but to no avail! I couldn't distract her enough. I thought the extra-tiny clear rubber bands I had purchased might help (and they did for that half hour) but I haven't gotten one in since. I won't give up though. Eventually, I'm hoping she'll give in and indulge her Mommy's love of amateur hairstyling.
Today at swimming Leah surprised me again...by going on the boat at our swim class. We have been practicing getting the tots used to equipment and exercises they will experience throughout their years taking swim lessons. We've discussed life jackets, played with kick boards, waited on the bleachers for class to start (the toughest lesson for Leah to learn!) and practiced taking turns with each child going to the swim instructor and away from Mommy!
Today we taught the kids to sit in the little raft and hold on with both hands while they were towed around by Mom VERY SLOWLY. Leah was like an old pro! Again, the toughest part had to do with patience. Getting out was her least favorite part and waiting for her turn to come up again was GRUELING...but we made it through. And of course...her new favorite word is "boat!"

Wednesday is Zoo Day!
When I was a kid my parents belonged to the Bronx Zoo. As a child, it always seemed so far from our house to me (in reality it was actually pretty close). I often wondered how my parents managed to take us for what seemed like weekly visits over certain summer breaks. Now that I am a mom, with a zoo five minutes from my house, I can see why a parent would take their child or children as often as possible.
Leah loves the zoo and even though ours is small, there is always something new to see. Many of the animals that were awake and active during our last visit, were resting this week. And we got to have a few new experiences this time around! The highlight for Leah was getting to touch Siri (that's LeLe's hand in the picture!), an asian elephant. She was so excited after the first touch...that we had to go back for several more. Leah was delighted to pet Siri's trunk, leg, and the side of her big elephant body.
The zoo also tuckers Leah out and makes her perfectly ripe for a nice summer afternoon nap! The only thing is...it makes me VERY tired too!!!

Color My World
This week's flickr theme is "color." Our trip to the farmer's market last Thursday inspired this shot. This bouquet didn't last as long as the last one I got , but a few of the blossoms are still going strong...the snapdragons and the sunflower especially. Leah loves flowers and fruit (even veggies too!) so our trip to the farmer's market are always fun.
Last week we got a big bunch of green beans that we enjoyed lastnight. Leah also picked out strawberries, blueberries, and of course some corn on the cob. Her new favorite fruit is cherry. We got a mix of two different types of sweet cherries, Bing and Queen Anne...but pretty much stuck with giving the latter to Leah. Queen Anne cherries are a pretty, pale, peachy-colored fruit (becuase of this they were once almost exclusively used for making maraschino cherries!), so they don't stain like the dark red bings do. Leah can't get enough. She's also gone crazy for the sprite melon that Pete picked out at the grocery store the other day!

Cheesy Face
Last summer our friends Pete and Marisa came to visit us with their son Nicholas. He was a few months younger than Leah is now, but he would crack us all up by doing what Marisa and Pete called "the cheesy face." Not long after Leah became a toddler herself she started making her own "cheesy face" (expertly demonstrated in today's photo). It used to come out whe we asked her to smile for the camera, but after she saw the reaction it got from me and Pete she began doing it all on her own. No requests needed (although we love it so much we do ask to see it from time to time). Now she'll just start cheesy facing out of the blue, like she did this morning at breakfast (along with balancing as many cheerios as she possibly could on top of her head). I think she does it just to be silly or to make Pete and I laugh and smile. I have to say it works!

ANIMALS!!!!
Thanks to our trip to the zoo this morning, Leah's new word for the day is "animals." We got there right as the zoo opened and we snuck into a few of our favorite indoor exhibits right away. Leah marveled at the huge lioness who was sitting right up against the glass. I love it that she always says "Kitty!!!" when she sees any sort of cat (even the BIG ones). And of course she was very careful to "shush" me since several other lions were sleeping.
We also got some quality time with the meerkats. For those of you who haven't caught it yet "Meerkat Manor" Friday nights on Animal Planet is awesome. Yes, now that I have a child...this is what my Friday nights are like...me watching animal planet. Sad but true. I like animals and all, but I figured I'd be the last person to get hooked on a show about meerkats. Still, they're such interesting (and cute!) social creatures that the show is almost like an animal soap opera. Check it out.
Leah couldn't get enough of the gibbons, ring tailed lemurs, monkeys, golden lion tamarins and of course the apes. She loves to watch them play and spends much of the time making monkey sounds and screaming "banana!" After that we hit the outdoor exhibits.
It was early and things were pretty quiet but one highlight was certainly the spectacled bears. It was pretty hot out and Leah got such a kick out of the fact that they were all wet from playing in their pool (just like she does!). Leah also enjoyed watching the humboldt penguins swim! See the little guy up above her head towards the top of the shot? We spent a long time at this exhibit and we even ate lunch on a bench nearby so that we could visit them again afterwards. By that time the kid was pretty pooped (and sweaty). But we did make it to the elephant exhibit just in time to see him poop (another highlight for Leah), took another walk to vist our favorite indoor pals and say goodbye, and we headed back home.
Leah kept signing "more" and when I would ask "more what?" she'd say "zoo!!! animals!!!" Whew...I'm glad we purchased a memebership.

Very Serious....
As you can tell from this image, Leah is serious about her pool! I like the close-up nature of this shot and the shadow of her hair falling across her eyes. The Lilly Pulitzer bathing suit, also makes it for me. It's got a design that includes only what can be described as "big green splats" and cute little hiding hippos.
Thanks for all the sweet comments on yesterday's picture, especially the one mentioning aqua socks. I have been meaning to purchase a pair for her for our up coming trip to the beach, but as yesterday's picture proves I think she needs them now.

I plan to (hopefully) pick things up again in Spring 2007 and I'm already working on a few Summer 2007 weddings now!!! Whew!!!! We are particularly excited about Auntie D's upcoming 2007 nuptials. Congrats to her and Mike who recently got engaged. More on that in a future blog.....

Ouch it's hot!
We knew it was going to be a scorcher this weekend and into this week, so on rainy Saturday morning we set out for Target to get Leah a baby pool. It's no surpirse, but the kid loves it. Much like she does in the tub, Leah gets right down on her stomach and practices blowing bubbles (ie drinking the water!), getting her face wet and "swimming." She likes to practice for our parent-tot class at the Y. Pete urged me to catch this shot of Leah in a ballet type stance. Our little basketball court, which was where we set up the pool, was HOT! Needless to say, Leah kept climbing out of the pool only to erupt into a little dance where she'd try to keep her feet from getting burned. Pete kept screaming (and laughing...'cause he's just that kind of dad) " Leah, Put your feet in the pool!!!!" Finally we had to pick her up and put her in, as she just kept doing her dance...switching feet to try and keep 'em cool. She had a great time and is CONSTANTLY asking for more "POOOOOOL!!!!!"

Baby Explosion!
I thought this was a fun shot from a different angle. I love the little pink terry cloth Ralph Lauren dress/coverup too. Again...gotta thank those Herrera girls for the cool threads. We also need to congratulate the girls (and Mommy and Daddy, my cousin Carole and her husband Joe) on the arrival of their new baby brother Holden Thomas, born at 9:09am Friday July 7th.
As if that wasn't enough, my good friend Kaylin gave birth to Parker on Father's Day (I'm sure that was the best present her husband Tom could have asked for!). After that our friends and neighbors the Gilberts welcomed kid #3, Wes, on July 8th. You'd think that would be it right? But NO!!!! Our friends Chris (some of you might remember him from our wedding party) and Rebecca Kaderabeck welcomed 2 new babies on July 10th! Twins Lucas and Hannah were born a minute apart and it sounds like everyone is doing great.
Whew! Five new babies in less than a month...and four of those in less than one week! Wow! I know it's gotten me thinking about our own impending arrival in October. Thankfully, we've (and that especially means Ms. Leah) got some more time to get used to the whole new baby idea. In the meantime Pete will be working hard creating another nursery masterpiece (lots of wallpaper and 1925 windows= some serious hard labor).
We'll even manage to fit in our first "family" vacation like I mentioned yesterday. My friend Erin asked where we are going and this year it will be to the Jersey Shore. We've rented a house with my parents and siblings for a week and we can't wait to introduce Leah and Clare to the sun, sand and surf!!! All I can say is I am one brave Mama. Eight months pregnant and spending a week in a bathing suit? I must be crazy! Have a great day everyone!

I'm not a Baby, Not yet a Toddler
I guess Leah is for all intents and purposes, a toddler...but I couldn't resist a little play on Mama Britney's lyrics for fun. Leah still has some strategically placed pudge, the elbow dimples, wrist "rubber bands" (as the pediatrician calls them) and that precious baby mouth. But her hair is getting longer, she's wearing 18-24 month old clothes these days, and just look at the way she's sitting!!
I caught Leah in a "space madness" moment here. That's Pete's term for the glazed over, lost in one's own thoughts looks we all get from time to time. Before this shot we were partaking in One of LeLe's latest favorite activities: looking through my photo albums.
There is one she especially likes that includes pictures of Kathleen and Mark's engagement party, Pete's Day at Skip Barber Racing School, several trips to see Pete's family, and our visit from the Ohio crew last summer. She loves to name her grandparents and aunts and uncles and in some situations label what they are doing ("Maga Eat" is her favorite thing to say when she sees one picture of Pete's Mom enjoying some pizza!). Leah keeps saying "Clare" when she sees pictures of herself as a baby...which may be why she's looking a little confused in this picture. "Why are my parents always cuddling that other baby???" she wonders. Or perhaps she's just trying to figure out a way to score a slice of Grandma's pizza. You never know with Le.
Most likely, she's just spacing out becuase the poor thing is still feeling under the weather. We went from fever, to a reaction to her DTaP shot, to a yucky cough and cold. Every year it seems we make it through the winter relatively unscathed...only to get sick in the summer. Let's get it out of our sytem now so that we can enjoy the rest of our summer days and our vacation at the end of August!!!

Kinda like Lemmy, but different...
Other than the fact that she came down with a major fever during our visit, Leah loved the Rosamond-Gifford Zoo. She's been a number of times already but now there is a whole lot of recognition in her eyes when she sees certain animals. Even with her eyes half closing and exhaustion settting in, she managed to squeak out a very sweet "ROAR!" as we passed the lions on our way out.
Leah and her Grandma really enjoyed the dog training demonstration with the zoo's barn dog Emma. Leah had a tough time holding herself back...she loves dogs and really wanted to pet sweet Emma. We saw sheep, donkeys, a llama, some really cute meercats (another favorite of Grandma! They are so cute!), lynx, and a whole lot more. We dodged some rain here and there and Pete enjoyed showing Leah the tigers up close and personal. The Nowak clan LOVES cats of all kinds, but the big ones are particularly exciting.
It was right after this shot that Leah started melting down...poor thing. Not the usual toddler, screaming meltdown...just giving into feeling over tired and feverish. Luckily, the zoo isn't too large so we swung by the penguins quick (another Leah fave...she loves anything that swims like she does!) and even saw a monkey who took a sincere interest in Leah. I joked with my little "monkey toes" that she and the monkey were probably separated at birth.
Well, LeLe made a full recovery but she's now a little under the weather thanks to her DTaP innoculation yesterday. The reason I am able to blog this morning is because the little angel actually requested a nap. She said "Rock?"...so I said sure and rocked her in the rocking chair. Then she pointed to the crib and said "Lola?" So I asked if she'd like to go in. "Yes" she said.
"Alright" I thought...hardly believing what I was hearing (at 8:40 am no less!). I put her down and said "Wow, you are being a very good girl asking for a nap when you need one!" She smiled weakly and said "Yes," implying "DUH, of course I'm a good girl Mommy!"
I covered her with her Lola blanket and wished her a good and restful sleep. I wish you could have seen how sweet she looked. "OK" she said. Even though Leah at 18 months has proven to be a real challenge this little interaction reminded me that I named this blog Sweet Leah for a reason!

Grow, Grow, Grow!!!!
I got several shots of Leah "gardening" over the holiday weekend. How cute is the hat and the little dress?! Both were collected from our cousins Bella and Ava during our recent visit downstate. Leah loved seeing the girls, as well as Clare and the Bonvisutto kids. She also loves sporting all the outfits that are handed down to her!!! I love it that you can't see her face in this shot. I can't wait until I can get a chance to break out my watercolors and interpret this little scene myself.
Leah loves to water plants (she even pretended to water Grammy's houseplants while making a "shhhhhh" sound!) and watch them grow. Everytime we go outside she looks for caterpillars in and around my fuschia plant seen here.
Speaking of growth! Leah has done some growing of her own! We went to the doctor today and while the behavior was pretty rough (her pediatrician actually said "...I just LOVE the fight in her!!!!") I was delighted with her progress:
Height: 31.5" (50%)
Weight: 22 lbs (20%)...still a peanut, but that's OK.
Head: 48.5 (90%)...still large and in charge!
I guess she's got a big brain!
We're glad to be back home and we're ready to post. I've got some cute shots from Grandma Nowak's visit to our house and our trip to the local zoo. Leah enjoyed the 4th of July, even if she did have a fever Saturday and Sunday. She's back on track though and now that we have the grrenlight from the doctor, she's ready to try peanut butter!!! We'll let you know how it goes!

We're off to Grammy's!
I thought you guys would get a kick out of Leah at the library last Thursday. It was barely 10 AM and already we were out and about with LeLe all gussied up in her silver mardi gras beads. What makes these even better than normal mardi gras beads, is the fact that each strand has a big ol' medallion of featuring a local young professionals and community organization called "40 Below." Stylin' girlfriend!
We had a good time checking out books and we even borrowed a few CDs for Leah: The cool kids band Milkshake and They Might Be Giants' awesome album called "Here Come the ABC's." Both are perfect road trip music...and they'll give me a break from the D-O-R-A CD that a little someone LOOOOOOOVES a little too much! So much so that I can't even say the word "Dora" any more. I just have to spell it for fear someone will start demanding I turn it on. Leah actually spotted said cartoon explorer on a box of pampers halfway across Target this afternoon. Amazed at her eagle-eyed spying skills, Pete said "I can't believe she even saw that?!"
We'll miss you while we're gone, but we'll be back next week. Hopefully we'll be a little rested and ready for another week of trips to the library, the park and the farmer's market! Leah will miss this particular library's Thomas the Train table...but Grammy's got pretty good toys at her house and we're looking forward to seeing lots of family and friends. Enjoy your week!!!

Daddies
Our family had a great Father's day weekend. Pete and I were able to attend the wedding of our friends Mary and Curtis, thanks to a visit from Grammy and Pa. We had a great time, and there were quite a few blasts from the past (to say the least)! But I think Leah had an even better time than we did. Leah basked in the attention of her grandparents, made a puppet at the hands-on-art center at Art on the Porches, ate lots of good food, and survived the heat with style! Check out that outfit...and the belly to match!
Pete and my Dad enjoyed a father's day round of golf at Burnett Park, and were treated to a home made breakfast. Leah had made them cards and while My Dad's is still in the works, Pete's father's day gift finally arrived this week! Plush Puffs Marshmallows! We treated him to a bag of caramel swirl and one of kona coffee crunch. Pete really is a marshmallow connoiseur...and you know these have got to be good if Jessica Alba likes 'em! Just kidding by the way...I'm not a Jessica Alba fan, although she was pretty good in "Sin City."
Oh yes, and there have been several requests for info on Pete's new job!!! I'll blog on about that next time, but I will say he is really enjoying it (all 3 days and counting...) so far!!! Thanks for the encouragement. I know it means a lot to him!

Coming Attractions
I have three really great shots from my most recent sonogram with KidX. I chose this one since it shows the torso (the big circle in the lower left corner...those dark spots near the top of her chest are the heart) and head/face (right smack in the middle of the shot). Next week, Leah and I are taking a break to visit grammy and Pa, while Pete adjusts to his new job (which he started today!) and works on KidX's new room.
As I mentioned before, the ultrasound tech said KidX is most likely (90%) female. We are painting the room yellow (a good plan, just in case of that other 10%) and we can't wait to pass Leah's bedding on to her little sister at some point. I know Leah will enjoy getting to pick out new big girl bedding and will get excited about the changes in store for her own little room.
The summer has just started it seems, but I am already so thankful for our new central air system. It should make waiting for KidX's arrival a whole lot easier!!!

My budding babe!
One of my priorities as a Mom is to try and make Leah's childhood as fun as possible. As a result, we try and get out to explore different environments, meet and spend time with a variety of people, and experience all sorts of activities. I can't say this comes easy to me. It's tough to come up with a whole bunch of ideas for where to take your toddler, but summer has provided a small bit of inspiration. The weather is nicer and that makes a difference. My work load is also a little bit lighter and that means I'm not chained to my computer...another big plus.
This morning Leah and I went to the farmer's market. We bought a basket of impatiens to hang by our garage and a trailing succulent plant (I think it's of the Burro's Tail variety) that we can keep outside this summer and bring indoors this winter. We inhaled two of the fresh, little, homemade donuts that are the highlight of our local market. I checked out the many plants and vegetables and Leah got some locally grown strawberries. We even ran into one of our neighbor friends and her newborn (a highlight for LeLe who is pretty much in love with all babies!). But our best purchase of the trip was a lovely, big, garden bouquet for $3! Leah was enchanted by the different flowers, even if she didn't appreciate their smell. She recoiled a few times after smelling them, but she always went back in for another sniff!
We had a really fun time. I'm thinking this might have to become a Thursday morning tradition over the summer, even if it's just to have a donut and pick up some cut flowers. I'm still in awe of how inexpensive they were! They really did brighten my day, but not as much as Ms. Leah does of course!!!! I'm still smiling to myself about the scrunched-up, yucky smell face she made....

It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing!!!
Leah loves to swing. This is a new development. She was never really into the infant swing (until we started bringing it outside last summer) and up until a few weeks ago she was more interested in just plain old running around the playground. Now Leah sees the allure of play equipment. In addition to enjoying a swing at our MOPS Summer Playdate today, Leah also delighted in the sand area. Mommy did no such delighting as it made for lots of sand in shoes! Save it for the beach LeLe! Leah also likes the slide a lot and is great at screaming "SLIDE! SLIDE! WEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" just to prove that fact to everyone and anyone who may or may not be listening.
This shot is nice becuase it shows Le in a rare relaxed moment. She was so happy. I mean..check out the grin. Blue sky, leafy trees, green grass, a breezy day for swingin' and that chubby 17 month old smile. What more could a Mommy want?

Life is a highway....
We've got a busy weekend ahead. Thankfully, the only travel we'll be doing is around Syracuse! Grammy and Pa will be in town so that Pete and I can attend the wedding of our friends from college, Mary and Curtis. I can't remember the last time Pete and I went to a local wedding! This should be fun. I know Leah and her animals will be having a blast checking out our big neighborhood art show, Art on the Porches and hanging out with Grammy and Pa. She's also looking forward to Father's Day and having two of her favorite guys (Pa and Daddy) with her again this year!
Leah is growing and changing with leaps and bounds each day! She is talking up a storm and still picks up new sign language signs here and there to use for emphasis, along with her words. She quickly learned the sign for "balloon" the other day from the "Happy Birthday Signs" book we have. Just in time to show it off for the Wegman's manager who Leah managed to score a free balloon from. What a charmer!

Laughs and Libraries
I love this picture since it shows two of my favorite girls, my God daughter (and cousin) Shannon and my daughter Leah, sharing a laugh. Shannon is great with Leah and they seem to have such a good time together. Shannon also keeps Leah stylish with all of the clothes she buys for her! They're adorable and every time we see Shan...she always seems to have another Leah outfit ready to go!
I snapped this at Auntie's Memorial Day BBQ. It was a great time. And I seriously think there was as much food there as I had at my wedding! Totally delicious!
This picture made me think of warm summer days, but today it's a little chilly (and a lot rainy) here. As a result, Leah and I made our first stop on what I'm calling our "Summer Librarypalooza!" Tour. Our local branch is quite small (I mean really small), but luckily it's part of a county wide system. We've been to story hour there and if I think Leah can handle it we might check out one or two of the pajama story times they hold in the summer. Local celebrities (the city police chief, our parish's pastor etc) are the readers, which I think could be fun.
Today's visit was to Liverpool though and Leah really enjoyed it!!!! They have a great children's room. We colored, looked through the stacks and read, picked out a fe w books and even a DVD, chatted with some other kids and played with the toy trains. Whew!!! It was a great time. Now we just need to decide which brach to check out next! Enjoy the day!!!!
