Sorry I've been away for a while. Believe it or not, when I neglect to post, I probably end up missing this blog more than anyone! I've said it before in the past, but "Sugar Hiccups" really is a great and much needed outlet for me. Posting allows me to reflect on our exeriences and daily life in a way that helps me to "see" things about Leah and Aislin and most importantly myself, that I might not otherwise catch.
On the other hand, both girls are growing at such a fast rate that I also feel required to be FULLY present during my interactions and time with them. This is harder than it sounds and it leaves less time for blogging (and working, and resting, cooking, and showering...the list goes on!).
Every day Leah talks more, and listening and talking back...man, that takes energy. I can hear certain people laughing at their computers right now..." Does she remember all the times she's talked MY ear off?!?" To that I will respond, yes...yes I do and I thank you for your patience with me. Aislin, is walking and starting to talk as well! She says: Mama, Dada, Night-Night, Baby, Milk and More! I think she can also sayapproximations of Aisy, Lemmy, and Ball, but I haven't quite confirmed that yet. All this talking is AWESOME. I am so lucky to be able to communicate with these guys, but it comes with a price tag. Neither girl wants to let me speak on the phone EVER. If I slip out of the room for a minute to shoot someone an email...both girls are right there two seconds later, Aislin crawling up my legand Leah asking me questions. My girls' communication skills are really starting to cramp Mommy's communication style.
So there you have it...that's why I've been out of the loop recently. That, plus everyone in our house was super sick for a while there. When I look at the picture above I realize that maybe Leah is more like me than I ever imagined. When I put this outfit on her (Shout out to the Herreras!) the first thing she shouted was "I'm an artist!!!" See what a berét will do to a girl? Then when I look again and admire Leah in all her pink and grey wool preppiness, I am reminded of the outfits I sported in college. Outfits that would've worked fine for a business or english class, but didn't exactly exude that "Art School Girl of Doom" look that was so hip back then...or anti-hip...I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Let's just hope Leah doesn't follow in Mom's footsteps completely...destined to be forever torn between her inner Mary Tyler Moore and that Art School Girl of Doom persona. Regardless, I will forever love this picture...once I see past the little bits of me, I easily envision Leah off to pick up some french bread and brie at her favorite boulangerie before heading back to her Paris apartment to try on her favorite clothes and do some painting. OK...so maybe there's still some of me left in there...

So, a dinosaur, a bunny, and a dragon walk into a bar...
Sounds like the beginning of a funny joke right? Well...there is no joking when it comes to our neighborhood Halloween Parade. The kids (OK...maybe it's the adults) take this annual event very seriously. There is a small impromptu marching band (the leader told me next year we are going to work on an all-kazoo rendition of "Thriller"), spectators come out from their homes to cheer the little ones on, and it's a chance to see all the awesome halloween regalia in daylight.
You can't tell from her face, but Leah was pretty pumped to be out in her sweet bunny costume. I personally enjoyed watching the stare-down between Leah and her friend Pete (he's the dino on her right with the brown belly and cool sneaks). I don't think she wanted him to get to close. I'm guessing that's cause dinosaurs eat rabbits don't they?
Not only did Leah love the parade but she trick-or-treated her little cottontail off on Halloween night!!! Even Aisy went out as a chick with daddy and Leah. There is still a big bowl of candy on top of our fridge but Leah is determined to work her way through it, by asking me for a piece every other waking moment of the day!
In a brilliant strategic move, Leah has decided to go into full-on potty-training commitment mode. We are now wearing underwear during the days at home!!!! The sticker chart we have been using has definitely served as motivation, but I think it is the possiblity of candy that has encouraged her to go beyond her previous efforts and really decide to go for it. Of course Dora-themed (thanks Fran!), funky tie-dyed (so totally New Paltz Grammy), and Disney Princess underwear totally help as well.
I hope everyone had a delightful Halloween. My girls are already getting geared upfor Thanksgiving. The holidays can never come around to early here!
