We are looking forward to a Christmas that's as sweet as Miss Leah! In an effort to minimize pre-holiday stress...the blog will sign-off today, and return with one more post Dec. 29th or 30th.
Tomorrow I'll be cashing in on the spa massage Leah got me for my birthday. After that we'll be heading to Grammy and Grandpa McKenna's house. Home base for the rest of our holiday travels and visits from friends. On the 29th we'll have one night here at home to sleep in our own beds, and then it's off to Grandma Nowak's. When we return it will just about be Leah's first birthday!!! A party (or parties, we can't decide) will happen closer to the middle/end of the month. I can't believe it's been a year!!! What a ride!!!
Enjoy your own Christmas or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus...whatever it is that you celebrate. Thank you for being part of Leah's life. Even though some of you live far away or only know her from the blog, I often share with her the comments I hear about her pictures and stories. Leah is a joyous child and I feel that the smiles and giggles she gives out regularly, come back to her ten-fold each and every day!!! Your friendship and support are most certainly appreciated. Merry Christmas!!!!!

Leah's Temptation
Sounds like a traditional Swedish Christmas dish huh? No, that's Jansson’s Temptation and it's very yummy. It would go very well with Glögg, a swedish mulled wine, that I try to make every holiday season since I worked at North Park University and was introduced to Swedish- American culture. After my sister Devon lived in Sweden for a semester, I became even more enamored with all things Swedish...but enough about that...
When I mentioned Leah's temptation I was speaking of our christmas tree!!! Just in case Santa is reading I have to mention that she has been a VERY GOOD girl when it comes to the tree. Honestly, I experienced more pain and headaches when it came to keeping her away from our fireplace. Apparently, a boring old fireplace is more exciting to our Leah than a sparkly tree. Or perhaps I just trained her well when it comes to grabbing at lights and ornaments. She loves to look at them and as I said before, every once in a while she'll make a move, but for the most part she's just content to watch it sparkle.
For some reason, even with the lower third of our tree only sparsely decorated with unbreakable ornaments, it looks prettier than I've ever seen it before. I'm excited to be traveling this year as well, as seeing other people's trees is always fun for me. I love how each person decorates theirs with unique style and flair. My Uncle Pete was recently telling me about his tree and it sounds great! Lots of special ornaments from friends and family. Ours is growing and changing too. I just bought an oragami crane ornament for Leah, to commemorate her first year with us! When I saw that it was made with japanese washi paper with little white bunnies on it (similar to the paper I used for her birth announcements) I knew it was the ornament for her. I hope everyone gets a little time today to relax, enjoy their own tree or holiday tradition, and do a little something for themselves...even if it's nothing more than a moment alone to sit back and sip some coffee or hot cocoa.

Christmas Cheer(ios)
Leah LOVES Cheerios. As a new mom, I've learned a lot more than I even thought there was to know about cheerios. I've learned that cheerios actually have a magnetic attraction to carpet. There's a scientist out there who should take note and make this his premier discovery! Cherrios also stick to EVERYTHING, just look at Leah's nose (a Mom's gotta have fun somehow!*smile*). Like mice, bugs or other household pests...where there is one Cheerio, you can bet there are plenty more hiding where you can't see them. Whenever I question "OH MY GOD!!! What did Leah just put in her mouth?" I know that 94% of the time it's a scavenged Cheerio from the floor (the other 3% is carpet fuzz, and 2% unknown...which means rummaging around in her mouth after it! Ick!) If I ever still question the contents of a Leah floor feast, I can usually determine the answer with just a whiff of the baby breath. As Pete noted the other day, half-eaten Cheerios have a VERY distinct smell. I know you parents and caregivers out there know what I'm talking about!
Sometimes I call Leah "snack-a-lack-a-ding-dong" (I know, where does this insanity come from??!) becuase she's always after puffs, wagon wheels, cheerios, or since Pete introduced them to her the other day (when I wasn't home!!)...Christmas cookies. What are Daddies for, right? This baby loves to get her snack on, much like her Mommy and Daddy. As a result, we'll do our best to keep the Christmas cookies to a minimum and the whole grain o's a more central focus of her snacking habits. As a way of offering her cherrios in a measured amount I hold a few in my hand and let her pick them up individually and pop them in her mouth. I should have known that would only last for so long! She quickly turned to what I call "the popcorn grab," taking a handful and shoving it in her mouth. And in a moment that cracked me up she decided the other day to attempt the "dog food method," taking her face and mashing it into my hand gobbling cheerios like she was in a pie eating contest that her life depended on. It was hilarious. And I finally learned why they included the word "cheer" in Cheerios.

Alright already, take a nap kid!
Today's late post can be blamed on Leah's refusal to nap. She went in for her morning nap, talked and cried, yodeled and whined for an hour before I finally broke down and got her out. Even though she was in her room and I was free to roam the house sans baby during that time, I somehow managed to get little done with my free hour. There's just something about hearing her over the monitor or knowing she's up there crying...it makes me less productive. Of course during our mid-morning trip to the bank and to get gas, Leah drifted right off. Just in time for us to get home and meet the Salvation Army guys who were here to pick up an old sofa and a bunch of clothing donations. We lunched, played and read a few stories and then I put her down for nap #2. Still no dice. I can hear her up there now...the lungs on that girl. She sure is determined.
I thought this picture of Leah was cute. One of those momets where all 15 courses of her dinner are on her face. The white stuff: french vanilla yogurt. The orange-red: spaghetti sauce. Two great tastes that go great together...just like Leah and napping!!!!

Snow and Smiles
Gone is the lovely sunshine that was cascading in through our living room window Wed. morning as I took this picture. We're covered with gray skies and several inches of snow right now. Schools are closed and the white stuff is still coming down! I told my clients I was "out of commission" after today so that I could relax for a week and enjoy Leah's first Christmas with her and Pete. Luckily, I managed to get all of their work done (I still have my own personal and business Chrismas cards to do though!). Too bad I have a hair appt. and a few VERY important packages to get out to clients otherwise, I would just stay inside and hunker down with the beautiful little girl pictured here.
I love this picture as it really gives a glimpse of what Leah is like to live with. Even when she's strapped down, she's still waving and chattering. Leah loves to get your attention and show you all of the things around her that she finds interesting: the radio, fuzz on the floor, and especially our Christmas tree. One hilarious thing she does now, is every time I say "No, Leah!" she shakes her head to indicate "no" and wags her finger at me like I'm the one in trouble! I'm sure no one will get this "Absolutely Fabulous" reference but there is a great moment in the episode "Morocco" where the character Bubbles does the same exact thing. I think of it every time Leah "scolds" me and I laugh.
Thankfully I caught Leah at a good moment here. She was fully rested and was cooperating with me as I bundled her up (no fun for an 11 month old!). Now when I say "cheese" and demonstrate a cheesy smile for her, she smiles too. That's what I did here. I love the hand and the way her eyes sparkle. Seeing her enjoy Chirstmas, even if she doesn't understand it, really is going to be the best gift this year. Now if It would only stop snowing long enough for a plow to come through so that I can see the road! Stay warm everyone!

Portrait of starlet with cheese
It's another BUSY one so I'll have to be quick. I couldn't resist posting a picture from yesterday's lunchtime photo shoot though! Leah LOVES my sunglasses. She likes to take them and attempt to put them back on me, resulting in lots of eye-poking and laughter. Yesterday she finally figured out that even she can wear them. Can you see the Mamarazzi reflected in her lenses? What a little starlet! I'd love to see a picture of Madonna or Catherine Zeta-Jones like this, complete with bib! Mmmm...saving some of that american cheese for later Leah? Probably, but for now she just "Vants to be Alone!!!" Enjoy the day everyone!

Starting Early
Today is the Big MOPS Christmas Brunch so this will be short. There's good homemade food I need to get to! Anyway, I thought this picture reflected a bit o' the holidays...even if it doesn't really say "Christmas." We snapped this after Leah's trip to the mall with Daddy on Sunday afternoon. Apparently, she's a quick study and has already learned all about credit and debit cards. Consumers are getting younger and younger these days I guess. We'll do our best to shield her from raw commercialism though for as long as we can! I think here she wasn't so interested in the money as she was in Daddy's Driver's License picture. I think she was wondering why he looks so serious! Enjoy the (COLD) day out there!

Did that little girl make Frosty cry?
So after we tortured our child with Santa and let her have a nap, we took her out to the Christmas in Strathmore Festival. There was an awesome family snowman making contest, games for kids of all ages, and popcorn and hot cocoa. Pete sold wreaths and Leah and I scoped out the scene. We got to hang with friends and even meet Frosty (aka my neighbor Sue)!
Pete took this shot and got a real kick out of it. Leah was a little freaked out at first ("Geez Mom! How many oversized Christmas characters can a baby take in one day?), but once Sue started talking in the cute little voice she always uses with Leah, the babe calmed down. Leah still didn't want Frosty to get too close, but hey...at least she's looking at him in the picture! As you can see I decided to go for it full smile here, in hopes that it would get Leah smiling too. Sue (I mean Frosty!) tried to play the old peek-a-boo card with Leah, but as Pete pointed out it looks more like Leah just made the big snowman feel rejected and cry. It's sort of funny how pictures can tell a totally different story then they were meant to sometimes.

Nightmare Before Christmas
OK. So as you can tell from the picture "Breakfast with Santa" turned out a little scary in the end. It started fine. Leah enjoyed the pancakes and socializing with all of our friends and neighbors. When we went upstairs to meet the big guy she seemed excited. She was pointing at Santa and "chatting" up a storm. A younger baby, maybe 7 or 8 months old, went before us. She was docile as could be and snuggled right up to Santa, playing with his beard. I thought this might actually work!
As we waited in line, Leah kept pointing to the big basket filled with goodie bags beside Santa (is she her father's daughter or what?). When it was our turn I asked the teenage kid taking the shots if I could give her one to hold. I figured that might soothe the savage beast. Leah also seemed interested in the bell Santa was holding, so I said to St. Nick "If you jingle the bell I think she might go for it." He jingled and I attempted the hand off. Well...SHE FREAKED. Apparently Santa is worse than getting four shots at the pediatrician. I've never seen her cry with such terror. OK, she did cry like this when we got her lead levels tested recently (she's fine by the way), but that was having blood drawn! Much higher on the painful scale than meeting Santa I would say, at least in my book.
As you can sort of tell from Santa's stance in the picture, he tried to hand her right back to me. But being that I've spent so much time documenting the first year of this child's life, I was not going to miss the opportunity to capture her first Santa experience (no matter how horrifying it was!). So I grabbed the shot. Besides, it's a baby/toddler rite of passage don't you think? Anyway, I was then urged by the crowd to get up there with Leah and try and take the old Santa with baby AND Mommy shot. Just what I was trying to avoid in the first place. Against my better judgement I gave it a try, but Leah wouldn't even have that. She wouldn't even go near the man. She was scarred, at least for the next hour.
With some hugs from Mommy and Daddy she perked up pretty quickly. One woman said "Are those Santa tears I see?" Another little boy told me Leah was scared because "she probably knew it wasn't really Santa, just one of his helpers." His idea of a baby not being fooled by imitations made me smile. Her outfit and the little snowman slippers (that squeak!) were a big hit and overall we had a really great time. "Breakfast with Santa" is a family tradition we'd like to continue through the years. And who knows...maybe next year Leah will go for it?! We'll see. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...
Well we've got lots of the white stuff here now! Just in time for the big neighborhood Christmas celebration. It should be fun. I'm picturing a scene from the movie "Funny Farm" with Chevy Chase...Currier and Ives meets The Griswolds.
I'll be sure to charge my battery up and take lots of pictures. As part of the festivities, we'll be taking Leah to have breakfast with Santa tomorrow morning and hopefully, get her picture taken with the big guy. After Leah's nap we'll head down to the park where they'll have horse-drawn carriage rides, a family snowman building contest, carolers and a tree lighting party with hot cocoa and popcorn stringing. Pete volunteered to sell wreaths and may also take a turn in the big blowup snowman costume! We'll see...
We also plan to get our own Christmas tree. I can't wait. I'm sure Leah will do her best to terrorize it and I may only be able to decorate it from the middle up to the top but that's ok! It's Christmas with a baby and she's already made this season more fun and meaningful for me than it has been in years! Enjoy your weekends everyone. Stay warm!!!

Mischief girl!
So yesterday, I'm sitting at my computer desk trying to get a few spare minutes of work in...when I look over and see this! Thankfully my camera was close at hand and I was able to snap a shot. I've been delighted that, up until now, Leah hadn't really been able to reach too far back on the lower shelf of my studio table. But being the resourceful baby that she is it didn't take her long to find a box and nudge it into place as a step-stool!
I'm not sure how much of it was just dumb luck (as you can see we have an overflow of product boxes in my office right now) vs. sheer baby ingenuity, but Leah really used this moment to her advantage. There was a flurry of flying craft and sewing supplies, lots of pulling and pushing on my baskets, and some squeals of delight from Leah before I broke this little party up. Boy this baby really keeps me on my toes!!

Honk!
I gotta credit Pete with this one. Leah has been a Mama's Girl lately, especially when it comes to that early evening period between dinner and her bath and bedtime routine. I've been trying to get some work done during those few minutes while Leah and Pete play, but she hasn't been going for it. She just wails and does the full-on, red face, big tears, heartbroken sort of cry that no Mom can stand to listen to.
Pete does his best to keep her occupied, but I usually end up backing away from the computer to play with them. And I'm always happy I do. It's nice to get some fun family time in where we're not eating or performing some sort of daily task with Leah. Last night Leah was all over me, so Pete took on the photographer job and caught a few sweet shots. And while I might be sort of smiling here...let me tell you it hurt. Whew...that baby has a thing about jamming fingers in other people's noses and holding on for dear life with her razor blade nails. Ouch!!!
Today we're off to the new neighborhood playgroup. It should be fun! Have a great day everyone!

He knows when I'm awake???
Leah has fallen in love with Santa! And what sensible girl wouldn't? He's jolly, brings you presents, knows how to accessorize (c'mon he's got coordinating hats, boots and mittens people!), likes cookies and milk, and is good with animals! That last one is particularly important to our LeLe.
We've had some fun play time with the cute (and eerily skinny) musical Santa that my Mom gave me last year in anticipation of Leah's birth. I caught this shot as Leah tried to get Santa off of her head. I love how she seems disturbed by the fact that Santa's always watching (at close range in this case!) to see if little children have been bad or good. The "yikes!" look on her face says "I better put the good behavior in high gear for the month of December!!!" As her Mommy, I'll be sure to let the big guy know that she's a pretty good girl most of the time. And besides, who can resist that face?! Not Santa!!!!

Christenings, Colin, and Cousins...
These are a few of Leah's favorite things! We had a great time at Clare's Christening this weekend. Leah's own godfather, Uncle Colin, was sure to sit next to her to help with lunch duty. Mommy (that would be me!) forgot to bring cherrios, puffs, wagon wheels etc.. So after begging finger foods off of every guest with a toddler we settled on giving her some "fruit medley" until the food arrived at our table. As usual Leah had lots to eat and she truly enjoyed the chance to see much of her extended family!
She especially liked getting to see the Herrera girls. Thanks for the new shipment of dresses and sweaters ladies (and Joe too...he's one Dad that knows alot about fashion!). Leah was also excited to spend time with Auntie K's nieces, nephews, and friends. But of course, the highlight of the day was Baby Clare. When they are together Leah just wants to touch her and love her. Life is only going to get more fun for these two as they grow up together. I know they'll have many good times and adventures, like I did with my own siblings and cousins.

Celebrate the Difference!
As I mentioned earlier in the week, my Uncle Mike sent us an excellent children's CD (and some other fun goodies...who doesn't love stickers?) by one of his favorite artists, Terri Hendrix. Her music is all over the map on this cd, with sounds of bluegrass, folk, country, jazz and rock all rolled into one! Leah can't get enough of the song "Get your Goat on!" and I really like the positive messages that can be found in her lyrics. There's lots of encouragement to be yourself, respect others, find the good in all different types of feelings and emotions and most importantly to HAVE FUN!
I thought this crazy shot I took during our Christmas photo shoot was a great example of Leah celebrating the many characteristics that make her unique. The goofy "old man smile" on her face, the one that makes her look as if she's got dentures or no teeth always makes me laugh. Notice the "snapping" fingers. She was truly getting her goat on in this one. The "crazy eyes" also show her passion for music and enthusiasm for getting down with her bad self. Having her little christmas fleece on just rachets this picture up another notch in the silliness department.
One neat surprise was that the "car car" song was included on this CD! How cool is that? Leah loves it...along with "Nerves" and "Play Ball." Thanks so much Uncle Mike for the thoughtful gift!

More Please!
Another late day, but that's what happens when we're busy with MOPS. I thought you might enjoy this shot of Leah doing the ASL sign for "more." It is so exciting to be communicating with her and her ability to sign back and learn new signs has come just in time!!!
Lately when Leah wants something she stretches and reaches towards it and starts to babble or whine. This would be ok, except that for the past two days she's been ponting at one corner of the kitchen and I can't for the life of me figure out what she's pointing to! Is it the candle? The kitchen aid mixer? The pear? What???
Needless to say, signing definitely eliminates some of that. When she puts her two hands together like this (it's amazing how clear and decisinve a motion she makes it too!) I know she wants more of whatever it is we're doing. More macaroni and cheese please! More playing (as in..."do that again Mommy!"). More bouncing or more music. Now that she's got "more" down, we've been working on the compliment to that..."all done." I hate cutting the kid off especially when she's looking at me cutely and showing off her signing skills...but there's only so many wagon wheels in a canister or times I can bounce the kid before she pukes. I'll keep you posted on our progress.

Grandma and her girls
I thought this picture was neat. I love how Leah is smiling and trying to snuggle up to her big cousin Maddy. The sunlight and the colors are great too. Grandma and Leah are rockin' the brown, while Maddy shows off the accent color of the day, pink. As you probably gathered from yesterday's post, Thanksgiving was excellent. But the rest of the weekend was fun too.
Pete, his Mom, myself and Leah all took a tour of the Darwin Martin House Complex. A beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright construction that is currently being restored. We had a great time and perhaps Leah soaked up some of Wright's artistic genius while we were there. I think Santa might bring her some blocks this Christmas so if I walk into the living room one day to find a wooden model of Fallingwater...I'll know my plan worked!!!
It was a wonderful weekend with family and next weekend we'll visit with more of the people we love at Clare Bear's christening. Tomorrow I'll have to tell you about the fun CD that Uncle Mike sent Leah. She's been having fun dancing to it (and it has been making diaper changes a little easier! She likes to snap her fingers while I change. Whatever works!!!). Now I just neeed to catch her a photo of her in disco mode! Have a great day everyone. Don't blow away...boy is it windy here!!!!

Put your hands together for Turkey Day!
Leah had a blast at Grandma Nowak's for her first Thanksgiving. Aunt Anne and Uncle John cooked some amazing food and Leah ate like the crazy baby she truly is! Leah's menu included: turkey, mashed potatoes with a little gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans (these were her favorite item!), stuffing (also very popular) and dinner rolls. She even had some cheese and crackers just like the grown ups!
As you can see from the shot, Leah was pretty thrilled with the entire event. She clapped and smiled all through dinner, that is...when she wasn't stuffing her face! I can't believe how much she ate. She even made great use of the sign language we've taught her and asked for "more" several times. Of course I catch the picture where she's got a little snot bubble going on, but it's just SO LEAH. She is one funny kid. She cracks herself up, which never fails to get me laughing too.
It was great to be with her Daddy's family for this exciting first and we can't wait to share her first Christmas with everyone very soon. There is so much to be thankful for this year! And this picture (boogie bubble and all!) will always remind me of that! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!!!

Neighborhood Watch
There's a big picture window in my office that Leah just loves. She stands and shouts at the neighbors as they do yard work and socialize. Her eyes light up when a kitty creeps past or one of the local dogs starts barking. And of course Leah loves the neighborhood kids. Whenever we can we head outside so we can play with everyone. Each child needs to take his or her turn holding Leah and they do a great job of entertaining her with their funny faces and antics. We are so lucky to live on such a wonderful and friendly street.
Today Leah enjoyed an early morning moment at her window. It snowed here lastnight, so I think it was fun for her to see the fluffy white blanket of snow covering everything. Hopefully we'll have nice weather for our ride to Grandma's house tomorrow. We can't wait!!! Have a family and friend-filled holiday everyone, with lots of yummy food and good times. We'll miss the people we can't be with, but we'll be seeing many of you very soon.

Truckin'
This shot doesn't quite have the artistic flair of yesterday's photo but it's hard to catch a baby on the move. Ever since we got Leah her V-Tech walking toy off e-bay it's been hard to slow her down. When she's not ram-rodding it into furniture or checking her wheels to make sure everything is working ok (she takes after her Daddy and her Grandpa with that!), she's scooting all around the house!
I won't blog for long, as Leah went down for her morning nap like a charm. I have 3 appointments today (including a 6 month checkup at the dentist), so I better use these few minutes of free time here at home wisely. Leah's sitter Fran, who is also a blog fan, will be coming over. Besides making sure that Leah has lots of fun while Mommy is out, Fran is also a house cleaning wiz! My kitchen is always sparkly when Fran leaves and she's taught me lots of good crock-pot recipes.
Enjoy the day everyone and try to stay warm. It's chilly out there (at least where we are!!!!).

It's beginning to look a lot like...
OK. I know it's early to be talking Christmas, but I'm already working on weddings for Summer 2006 so things are always a little ahead of schedule at our house. Actually, is it possible to be both ahead of schedule and behind schedule at the same time? If so, then that would be most accurate. Regardless, I am working on holiday cards and invitations for several people right now so I figured I'd better get my own ready as well.
Leah and I had a fun photo session last week with the little "santa" fleece she got from Auntie. I ran several pictures past people and this was my sister Kathleen's favorite. Doesn't it look like Leah's victorian-style horse and sleigh is parked outside to take her past the local skating pond and through the forest to Grandmother's house? I was all set to use it on the card, but alas it is too dark. I tried all the color correction tricks I had up my designer's sleeve, but it just won't print well.
I managed to go with one of Kathleen's other selections for my card, but she loved this one so much I had to share it with you! I guess that's a great thing about having a blog. Certain pictures just look better with the illumination of the computer screen. Snail mail, cards and stationery are a WONDERFUL thing (after all, it's my business) but today I am reminded that computers, blogging and email are convenient. I am lucky to have such fast and easy ways to keep in touch with all of you!

I forgot!!!!
Can you believe I actually forgot to blog today? Wow...what's happening? I've been so busy taking pictures of Leah for our christmas card that I've forgotten to take blog pictures! The Christmas ones are cute but so is this one taken by Pete. It shows another Leah favorite. Of course you know she enjoys mac & cheese, but spaghetti (or anything with a little bit of tomato sauce) is a meal highlight for Leah as well. Is it the taste or the mess? I'm not sure we'll ever know. Have a great weekend everyone. I promise not to forget you on Monday!

Awosting Falls
Well, if I thought the relaxing effects of my weekend away would last I was wrong. I'm still clinging tightly to the last remnants, but life (especially as the holdays approach) can get very hectic. Pair that with a baby who I believe is on the cusp of taking her first steps sometime soon and it gets even crazier. Life sure is going to be interesting in 2006!
When I do need a quiet moment, I enjoy looking at a picture of Awosting Falls. It is dear to me becuase it is where Pete and I got engaged, although the waterfall was mostly frozen and the trees were coated with a sparkling blanket of snow and ice that day. But it is also just a peaceful spot, that appears out of nowhere as you hike. It's lovely in every season and it reminds me of home. Every time I'm there I think about the true, timeless beauty of nature and how this waterfall keeps flowing each day while we're at work, eating dinner, and enjoying our families and friends. I know that's a very simple (maybe even mundane) concept, but it helps to ground me. What a comfort to know that this beauty is always there (for now at least, since it's on State Park lands).
I look forward to someday sharing this spot with Leah. Judging by the way she enjoys her stacking bath cups, I know she'll enjoy seeing a 60 ft. waterfall. She likes to have you pour water out in front of her as she runs her hands through it. Pete, who handles bath time, tells me that now she likes to try and catch the water in her mouth as well. Speaking of Pete...the stream that supplies the water for the Falls is called Peterskill. Then of course, we went on our honeymoon to Peter Island. What is it with that guy and his name?! Just kidding.
Enjoy the day everyone. It's supposed to snow here. Are you surprised?

CeCe and LeLe
I was going to put another picture from our hike up today but this one was just too cute to pass up! How sweet is my niece Clare? Her little mittens bring back fond memories of the days when Leah would stay still for diaper changes and sleep on me for entire afternoons. Well, no longer!
Leah and Clare had a great time at Grammy's house this weekend. Leah loves being able to be so close to a real, live baby! She pats Clare and smiles at her. Now Clare even smiles back!!! I thought my own baby was growing fast but now other babies seem to grow even faster (especially when you only see them every few weeks)!
If you thought Leah and Clare Bear (who now has her own blog by the way at claremckenna.blogspot.com) had a blast this weekend then Grammy and Grandpa were surely in heaven!!! Last year at this time there were no Grandchildren and now there are two! We also can't wait to see Leah's Grandma Barb over Thanksgiving and play with cousins Maddy and Jack. I think Maddy is going to be so excited to see how Leah has grown.
Well I better be off. There is LOTS to do today. Too much to list here. Enjoy the day! It's another rainy one in our world.

Hikes, Hot Curry Borscht, and Haircuts!
We had a wonderful time for our anniversary this weekend. When my parents drove off with Leah to visit my grandparents Pete and I looked at each other as if to say "what do we do now?!?!" The answer to that is head to main street NP and have a long and relaxing breakfast at the Bistro! After several cups of organic dark roast coffee we drove up to Mohonk Preserve and stopped at the visitors center for a map.
Giddy with the excitement of having an entire day and night to ourselves (for the first time since January!!!!) we chose a five mile roundtrip hike up through the Preserve to Minnewaska State Park and Awosting Falls, where we got engaged. After a brutal free climb up a steep shale "staircase" and a walk down the undercarriage road past lots of rock climbers, we finally reached the "start" of our hike. Needless to say...it had to be more like 6 miles. It took several hours and we were pooped and aching at the end but we had fun. It was great to talk like adults and enjoy an activity of OUR choosing.
More on our amazing dinner tomorrow. Pete did have a hot curry borscht that was out of this world though. But even with a great hike an incredible dinner and wonderful accomodations we still couldn't wait to get back to our baby!!!! Grammy gave her the sweetest little haircut at our request and she learned a little about "nice touch" when it comes to interacting with her baby cousin Clare. Since we've been home we've been trying to help Leah better apply the "nice touch" policy when it comes to Lemmy but it may take some work. Leah is so used to "kissing" her stuffed animals that she's taken to diving into Lemmy's body face first with an open mouth. Lemmy seems a little confused by it all but she still is a gentle soul with Leah.
I can't wait to share more pictures from our weekend. This one was taken by Pete on our hike (before the battery ran out in our camera). There's lots more to show you. I'll also have to take some new pics of Leah with the little walking toy we won for her off e-bay. Talk about off and running! It's a good thing I had this weekend to relax...there's NO keeping up with her now!!

I wont let another minute go to waste...
Leah loves to play with my sheer curtains in the living room. I'm not sure how long we'll keep them as they've already taken quite the baby beating! Nevertheless, this habit of hers made for an interesting photo shoot. The cloudy veil of cloth helps her to maintain the baby mystique she's been busy cultivating of late.
Well, we're off to Grammy and Grandpas later today. We'll have to put the car radio on scan and hope we can find some Radio Disney. I'm sure all of you who know Pete are giggling to yourselves at the thought of him listening to a kid's station. But Leah LOVES it and Pete loves Leah so he's grown to find his own Radio Disney faves ("The Hampster Dance" and "Axel F" as performed by Crazy Frog are two he likes). They play a lot of early 90s dance music which suits me fine and I must admit to loving that JoJo song..."Get out! Right now!" Anyway, as I've said before, there is nothing like seeing Leah get her groove on! It makes me smile. Have a great weekend everyone!

Waiting for the weekend...
Every year, as my anniversary rolls around I find myself taking a little time to think back on my honeymoon and our amazing trip to Peter Island. Sure, it rained most of the time (this shot was taken on one of the two sunny days we had) but it was fun nonetheless. Sort of like those rough days where Leah doesn't nap. It could be better but I'll still take it the way it is. Even when they're not at their best, tropical beaches and 10 month old babies, are still pretty great.
Back in April I wrote about what it would someday be like to take Leah with us on vacation. I can see her now...running through the surf, building sand castles and shaking the bottom of this palm tree trying to get a coconut to fall. Well I'm not sure a tropical vacation is in our near future. Which is extra sad considering that we might have some snow showers today. But as Pete and I prepare for our first night with both of us away from our baby, I find myself excited and hopeful.
I know I always enjoyed time with my friends and family, away from my parents, as a kid. Weekends spent with my grandparents were always great. Grandpa would fix me my favorite concoction of cream soda and milk and my Grandma would always be up early in the morning with me to talk or play a game. I always thought it was so cool to stay with my aunts and uncles without my parents. My Uncle Jay taught me that you can put ketchup on eggs and my cousins Matt and Jeff had a dog, a fun swing set, and a cool pool (all important things when you're 8)!
I know Leah will have a great time with my family this weekend. Just as she does when Grandma Barb comes down to our house to babysit for her. Knowing that Leah is comfortable and having fun without us will enable us to have a relaxing and enjoyable time ourselves. I'm really looking forward to it and I know when I do see her on Sunday I will be refreshed and ready for that big Leah hug she'll be saving for me!

Sorry we're late...
We had a busy morning, so I'm just getting to blog now. My Mom mentioned how much she liked this picture because of the pointing. Being a scholar of early childhood development, my mom was excited to see Leah recognizing different objects and items in her world and sharing them with the people around her. Leah is doing a lot of communication these days and I'm finally getting to see some of my sign language efforts pay off.
She has done the signs for "more" and "all done" several times, but I'm still waiting to see a little more consistency with that. Leah also lets us know when she'd like to hear some music, by doing some of her dance moves and most importantly pretending to snap. She continues to make the "kkkiii" sound when ever she sees our cat Lemmy. I think she also thinks most animals are "kitties." I've heard her make that sound to a few dogs and the odd chipmunk or squirrel too. Leah babbles alot, but it seems most of the da-da-da-das are reserved for when she sees or wants to crawl all over Pete. I'm looking forward to even more understanding of what this baby is thinking at times!

Fun Day
Today Daddy took off from work so that Mommy could attend her executive dialogue meeting and take care of a few business related matters. We will also be heading out to vote at some point, taking Leah to the Dr. for the second dose of her flu shot and celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary!
In the meantime Leah will be having fun with Daddy. I grabbed the chance to post another Halloween picture, since Leah is her Dad's Little Chick. He's been calling her that ever since she was born. This one was taken at the local Halloween Parade.
I am also excited that last Thursday's picture was the winner of flickr.com's Kids and Babies Weekly Theme Pool. Last week's theme was "close-up." This week's is "mess." It shouldn't be too hard to get a messy shot of Leah. She's been eating everything from stuffing to mac & cheese to even a little bit of pizza last night! As this week's winner I get to choose next week's theme and pick the winner. I better put my thinking cap on!

On the Move
Thanks for the many supportive comments I received on Friday's blog! They meant a lot to me. I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend.
We had a fun and busy weekend ourselves, with lots of playing, a bit of relaxing, and all sorts of running around the house! Pete and Leah love to crawl around chasing each other and they can't get enough of playing hide & seek around the corners and behind the furniture. We looked into getting some glass doors to our fireplace (as you can see, Leah is VERY mobile) and we raked a whole bunch of leaves! Leah is cruising along the couches, tables, and ottoman, like a crazy woman! Although it's hard to get a picture of her in action like that. It always look like she's just standing there. Next thing you know she'll be walking. I'm looking forward to that, but I'm also not rushing it. I've already lost a pound or two chasing Leah around like this. I can't imagine how exhausted I'll be when she's even more mobile!!
Pete and I have been joking that (of course) she'll take her first steps this weekend while we are away for our anniversary and Leah is staying with my parents. Wouldn't that just be our luck? We're just kidding. But between Grammy, Auntie K and Auntie D...I'm sure Leah will be getting a workout of her own!! Of course she'll have Grandpa there too to take her for a walk (or run) in the jogging stroller so Leah will be able to get a little R&R in as well. I think it will be fun for all. We're really looking forward to it.

Perfection!
As a new Mom, I'm beginning to realize that babies change just about everyday. I know I've said it before, but at 10 months into it, I guess it's finally starting to sink in. As a result my own life changes with Leah. It's hard to keep up with a pace that seems to run at lightning speed. And it's easy to be hard on myself for not keeping up in the way that I'd like to.
I'm learning to set boundaries for Leah. There are tears, but someone has to teach her that we can't always get what we want in life. For example, it's just too dangerous to climb over the arms of the couch and onto the end table. While I find myself having to take a firmer approach with LeLe at times, I'm also trying to become a kinder and gentler Mommy when it comes to myself.
I will never be able to get everything right. There will be unmade beds and dishes in the sink. I will forget a load of laundry in the washer and have to do it over again before I can dry it. I will go to the grocery store in a boogie-covered shirt because I just can't find another one to wear at the moment (those would be Leah boogies by the way...not my own). More than once since Leah has been born I've returned home from an outing only to glance in a mirror and say "I went out with hair like THAT?!" Makeup just is not a possibility on most weekdays. I make mistakes. I don't get thank you notes out on time. I fall asleep at 8:30 every once in a while.
People may look at me sideways, comment, or giggle to themselves, but that's ok. Maybe they're being hard on themselves and have forgotten, as I often do, that perfection is not what life is all about. It's imperfection that makes me smile...Leah with mac and cheese all over her face or the fact that Pete's laugh sometimes makes Leah burst out into horrified and frightened tears.
Through having a child I've learned what real perfection is. It is loving unconditionally. Loving in spite of faults or failings. It is the support I get from Nicolle, Marisa, Pete, our families...both nuclear and extended, and many of you. Perfection is Leah crawling up to me or Pete and just giving us a hug (something she's started doing lately). Perfection is watching Leah bounce up and down, shake her head back and forth, "snap her fingers," and generally rock out to a car commercial. Perfection is simply putting Leah down for a nap or the look in her eyes as I see that she knows who her Grandparents are. It is the everyday things...and that includes dishes and grammatical errors, burnt side dishes and forgetting to put deodorant on. Who cares about that stuff anyway? Leah's going to grow up fast. The dishes can wait.

Concentration
Are you sick of pictures of Leah crawling around outside yet? I couldn't help but post this one. I love the way the area behind her is washed out and how she's got her tongue curled in that "deep in concentration" way. The tongue, as well as the faucet of drool she's got going on, says it's teething time again. Leah is sleeping better. I think the time change issues have run their course. But she has been quite the cranky pants when she's awake. Another sign that more teeth are on their way.
We are trying to adjust our morning nap time to be just a bit later (moving it forward in 15 increments) until we get it back to where we were before. That would mean back to where I would put her down without 20-30 minutes of hardcore tears. I'm not sure if we'll ever get there but I know it's important for her to sleep. She's rubbing her eyes and yawning, signaling she's nap-ready...so I have to stay strong and keep my efforts up. We'll get the timing thing down eventually. We had it before. I just need to remember that babies are an ever evolving thing!

Abstract Baby
Not much to say today. Lots to do though! Business is booming over here and I have a lot to get done. Not to mention Leah is becoming more and more of a challenge to keep up with each passing day. It's lovely out so maybe a walk is in our future. I don't think it will be as warm as it will be the rest of the week, but we're hearty girls! I did live in Chicago and Alfred after all.
I liked this close up of Leah's hand. She's been doing so much with them lately! Pointing, waving, grabbing, clapping, attempts at "snapping" even...it's all very cute. Well, I better be off...I have to use Leah's nap time wisely. A Mommy's work is never done!!!!

Play for Today
There goes Leah...fearlessly foraging through the Autumn leaves of our back "yard" to get to me. I'm sure she was pausing here to look at a chipmunk or an insect, but I'm glad she did. It allowed me to get this shot. I don't often LOVE the photos I take (even if most of the time I love the subject) but I hit the jackpot with this one. The sun fell perfectly through the tree above her and I was able to capture Leah at play, something which I've had a hard time doing these days. She immediately tries to grab my camera the second I pull it out. We have to have a marathon photoshoot, giving her time to forget what I'm doing or tire of me, before I can get any good pictures. Playing outside yesterday helped. There were lots of distractions.
We had a great Halloween. Pete and I went as Harry Potter and Snow White over the weekend. We had a blast dressing up and Leah had a blast with her Grandma Nowak. Dinner at Kelley's was a highlight. Leah was a very well-behaved girl! There were lots of trick-or-treaters lastnight and Leah was in awe of the whole process. Today we'll have to spend some time recovering. Enjoy the nice temps this week everyone. I'm not sure how much longer they'll last!

Happy Halloween!!!
And happy birthday to Auntie K! Uncle Mark's birthday was yesterday. Speaking of yesterday, this picture reflects what a great time we had at the neighborhood Halloween parade. I got a few more shots of Leah in her costume but this one definitely gives the full effect! Don't the little striped tights just make it? Leah enjoyed seeing all of the kids out in costume. She was very quiet with all of the excitement, but she kept her costume on the whole time.
Leah was thrilled to put it on (the flapping wings in the picture sort of give that away). Every day for the past two months she'd go nuts whenever we went to her closet to pick out an outfit. She'd see the costume hanging there and would want to touch it and grab at it. Perhaps we'll put it back on this afternoon for any early trick or treaters that come by.
It might be a little crazy around here, as I'd like to get our already early riser to bed at the normal time. She's been waking up at 4:45-5 am now rather than her usual 5:45-6 am wakeup time thanks to the time change. We're trying to stick to our routine to get her back on track, but it might be tough while handing out candy (we have a very happenin' neighborhood on Halloween night!). We'll see. Have a great Halloween everyone! Be safe and enjoy.

Portrait with Avent sippy cup and wagon wheel
This week's kids and babies theme on flickr is "product placement." I figured I'd submit this picture of Leah with her Avent Sippy Cup. We're still recovering so I'll keep this brief. Leah has got to get better...we have big weekend planned. Grandma Barb is coming to see Leah and babysit for her while Pete and I head out for a Halloween party. I'd tell you what our costumes are but that's top secret! Leah is going as a chick and will be showing her costume off in our neighborhood halloween parade this Sunday. I'll be sure to get lots of pictures of the visit and the Halloween festivities for Monday! Have a spooky weekend everyone!

Herrera Haute Couture
I thought this shot of my cousin Carole Herrera, her youngest daughter Ava, and Leah was cute. We missed Ava's sister Isabella that day, but she had to go to school (we hope to see you soon Bella!). Couldn't Leah be Carole's baby with those blue eyes and auburn hair? It's all in the family I guess. We all had a great time eating lunch, playing, and talking about what a cutie Clare is!
Thanks to Carole and her girls, Leah's wardrobe has been replenished again! There were so many beautiful clothes packed in the boxes Carole brought for me. It's hard to look at the 18-24 month clothes and think about my little peanut fitting in them. I moved the 9-12 month and 12-18 month styles into her closet, but we'll keep the bigger stuff packed for now. At the risk of repeating myself yet again..."boy do they grow up fast!!!!"

Fun with extended family!!!
(from left: Erin, Leah, Devon, Matthew, Alexandra, Claudia, and Clare)
Not the greatest of pictures (sorry Claudia and Devon!) but it gets the job done and the babies are all looking pretty cute. Not to mention Kathleen's niece Alex, who looks so sweet in this shot! I love how she's got a baby of her own to hold. We had such a great time visiting with the other side of my sister Kathleen's family. Her sister-in-law Claudia made us a great lunch and the kids had a blast playing together.
We took Leah to the Pediatrician yesterday and she has a little case of croup. As a result we've done a couple of "steam baths" but for the most part she's doing well. We are going to lay low today and skip our MOPS meeting. It's the perfect day to cozy up and stay inside. We'll be enjoying the fall colors and the activity on our little street from the comfort of our (relatively) warm house. We miss you all and wish you could drop by for a cup of warm apple cider and some quality Leah time. If you are ever in the neighborhood...

The blog is back in town!
Hey everyone! We're HOME! It was great to sleep in our own bed (and crib!) lastnight. Daddy painted the dining room while we were away and it looks amazing. He also steam-cleaned our carpets thanks to our friend Mary who let Pete borrow her Bissell quick-steam machine. It's nice coming home to some fun changes.
As you can see from the shot, Leah is still feeling a bit under the weather. I think we might have to take a trip to the pediatrician today since she now has a nasty sounding cough. Still, I think she really enjoyed our trip. She REALLY wanted to kiss baby Clare, but we'll save that for when Clare is a little bigger and for when Leah is feeling a little better. We had a great time seeing Grammy and Grandpa. We visited Grammy's school and went to go see Great Grandma and Great Grandpa as well. Leah also got to fit in two playdates while on the road, with Auntie K's nephew Matthew and our friend Beckett. It was a tiring, but wonderful time. We can't wait to see everyone again soon.
I'll be sure to get some pictures up this week and recap some trip highlights for you. Enjoy the week!

Big Drool
Drool, boogies, eye-guck. I'm not trying to be gross, just talking about some of the everyday factors of life with a baby. I like the posted picture, as it shows Leah teething accompanied by some serious drool. Now that two new upper teeth are in, Leah is exploring them endlessly with her tounge. It's pretty funny to watch her crawl around with her tounge sticking out.
Leah is still in recovery from her cold so we decided to take an extra day before we headed out on our road trip. Let's hope all that travel doesn't cause her to backslide. I am doing my best to keep her cozy warm and to help her try and get lots of sleep. I'm also trying to keep myself healthy with lots of Vitamin C and getting some good rest. See you next week, if not sooner!!

Under the Weather
Leah and I are preparing for a trip to visit Auntie K, Uncle Mark, and baby Clare. After a quick overnight at Grammy and Grandpa's we'll head down to see the Acuti crew. That is...if someone is feeling up to it. Leah's poor little nose is red and raw. It's been alternating between seriously stuffed and running like a faucet. Poor kid. She's on the mend, but we don't want to make baby Clare sick, so we might have to postpone our trip a day or two. We'll see.
I know this shot doesn't really reflect the weather outside (although my photo "apple girl" did get an honorable mention from the Flickr.com Weekly Theme Kids and Babies: Autumn or Fall Pool!), but her mood here is just to perfect. It's a little serene, but it still does a good job of capturing the way Leah feels and looks when she's sick. Lately Leah has been fiesty though too. She's learned how to deftly block Pete and I when we swoop in to wipe her nose. it's pretty funny. Both hands go straight up to her face and she lodges them right under her nose preventing access.
Maybe we'll see you tomorrow, maybe we won't, depending on travel plans. But we'll try to keep in touch while we are off jet-setting around the state! If we don't get a chance to, we'll see you next week! Have a great one!

Another Apple Picture
I couldn't resist posting another apple shot from the other day. Leah really was having such fun playing with the apples. Forget toys! Why play with items you are actually supposed to play with when you can play with phones, fruit, garbage and all sorts of other dubious items?
Well our restful day yesterday, turned out not to be so restful. Didn't I say anything can happen? First Leah tried to eat a small wood/paint chip off of the floor. There was lots of gagging and coughing. We wrestled WWF style and I did my best to get it out of her mouth. Finally, about 20 minutes later I snagged it. I had given up hope and figured she had swallowed it. But no...she was just taking the chipmunk route and storing it for the long, cruel winter that I know is headed our way! Needless to say, it was a relief when that was over.
After that we got an invitation to visit a great indoor play club with our neighbors. It was perfect for a rainy day. The Moms had coffee and the kids and babies ran wild! Leah had a blast. It was so neat to see her interacting and playing with other kids. She is such a love, and has no problem crawling up to and climbing on other Moms! She was enthralled by the bubble machine they had there and she has now started "dancing" when music comes on. Turn on some tunes and Leah will immediatly start bouncing! I also got the scoop on what sort of toys interest her. Now I can pass her list onto Santa Claus. It was a great (and spontaneous) day!

Close up on life at home
I love taking close ups of Leah and I had to snag this one while she peacefully slept in her stroller on an afternoon walk. I love the bright sunshine cast accross her fingers and the detail on her thumbnail. Today we are having a restful day at home. Maybe we'll head out for a bit too (anything can happen!). It's amazing, but the term "restful" is not what it used to be for me. A restful day at home used to mean me plopped on the couch, watching hours of "Ab Fab" and flipping through issues of InStyle while sipping a glass of wine and screening my phone calls.
Now restful means maybe Leah stays in her pjs and maybe she doesn't, but otherwise it's pretty much the usual sort of day that we have. We stick to our routine, I get tuckered out before she does from all of the crawling around and playing. We battle light sabre style with our spoons as I try to get her to eat and there are more diaper changes than I care to count. And these are the typical days...I'm not including the curveballs life throws at you with the teething, colds, crawling and cruising related injuries, and general baby discontent.
While restful days at home aren't what they used to be, they're still fun. I love every minute I spend with baby Leah! Ok, well maybe not every minute (those darn diaper changes are pretty tough to enjoy!) but almost every single one...

it's all about the fashion!
This one was taken by Pete. He was mumbling something about the cube Leah's holding and the movie "Hellraiser." I didn't really get it, which is when I mentioned to Pete that it just so happens I've never seen that movie. He was appalled. What can I say? I know Halloween is near, but I'm just not a horror movie kind of girl.
Regardless, we have a very busy day today so I'll be brief. How cute is this outfit? Another shout out to the Kenney clan for making this one happen. There are cute little mice all over it. I have to say, it's a treat to dress her something feminine but not pink at the same time! The shoes are Leah's own. The new Robeez we bought her this week in fact. I was amazed when she let me put them on her this morning without a fight. I guess that just goes to show how much she loves them! Enjoy your day everyone!

Goodbye Summer
I know it might seem a little late to give our official goodbye to summer, but it was just this weekend that we started to pack up our summer clothes. I took this picture last week when Leah was still wearing a sundress and enjoying a stroller walk in the park. Needless to say, I think her look says it all. The concerned eyes, the furrowed brow, the meloncholy gaze from behind her her happy fish teether. It's time now for crisp breezes, rosy cheeks, and new robeez. We went out yesterday and purchased very cute pink ones with white kitties on them. Needless to say, Leah loves them about as much as she loves cats (which is A LOT!!). In fact now every time she sees Lemmy she says "kkkkkiiiiit." It's pretty cute. Now Leah's feet are warm AND stylish. Warm being most important where we live.
Enjoy this picture as Leah's last hurrah for her first summer. It was a fun one. I'll never forget the days we spent locked in my tiny office huddled around our one AC unit. Good times! I know I enjoyed it...I hope Leah did too.

An apple a day...
It was a great weekend. We finally got proper end tables for our living room (no more tray table accidents!). You can actually see one behind Leah in this photo. We got them, but they're not exactly in place yet. Pete and I worked hard on getting Leah to drink more from her sippy cup. I'd say we were pretty successful. The pediatrician was concerned about the lack of weight gain between her 6 and 9 months appointments. She gained just one pound, up to 17lbs. from her 16 lbs. back in July. As a result we are supplementing some of her nursings with formula and just trying to get her to eat more overall. Leah is so interested in playing and moving that she hardly wants to stop to eat sometimes. No worries, she's still VERY strong and the doctor said she is developing right on target. Leah was also recovering from a bit of a cold, so we tried to relax as much as possible too.
Yesterday we went to apple fest. It was an excellent time, even if it was VERY muddy. Pete and I had some amazing apple fritters. We checked out the craft tents while we drank hot apple cider. Leah smilled and babbled it up with all sorts of people and admired the rolling hills with the mist and fall colors just starting to bloom. I had her as bundled up as I could, but couldn't find a shoe in this house that would fit the girl! I think we need to search for a new pair of robeez this week. It's getting chilly. Hope everyone is enjoying Autumn!

October Rain
Lately, I've been getting a lot of comments about Leah's more contemplative side. When she's not smiling, I often hear "she's so serious!" or "what a serious girl" from neighbors or shop clerks or strangers we meet on the street. It's not so much that Leah can be serious, but like all of us she has her moods. On Leah, exhaustion, crankiness or illness, give out a solemn vibe. She's go, go going so much of the time that when she takes time to relax, she really does just that. Her eyes seem to drift away with whatever is (or is not) going on in that little baby brain of hers, and her body gets loose and rag-dollish. I took this shot for the Kids and Babies Weekly Theme Pool but mostly I just love it for the eyes and eyebrows. It helps me to see why people think she's so serious much of the time.
Obviously, for people who have met her or for those who check the blog regularly, serious is not the number one word I would use to describe LeLe. Fun, active, cute, smart, defiant, squirrely...are much more accurate. Then again I could go on and on about Leah and her personality quirks. Have a great weekend everyone. Stay dry!

'cause I'm a sucker for your lucky, pretty eyes...
Today we are off to Leah's 9 month pediatrician appointment. There is so much to ask. Three months time between visits is also a whole lot different than two months. Leah is hardly the same baby anymore. We had one sick visit in between for her diaper rash but that's cleared up. In addition, she's got 6 teeth now (two are still on their way down so they can't always be seen in pictures at this point), she babbles like crazy, and she's cruising! Pete and I watched her inch her way down the entire length of the bathtub this morning. A girls got to do what a girls got to do to get her stacking cups!
I thought I'd throw another stripey sweater shot on here today. This one is different from the others. You can see Leah's hair and I love that sweet smile. It's different than her toothy grin, but just as beautiful. As always, the eyes are in full-effect. But they are especially smiley here. The colorful links are also a nice touch. They were keeping Leah's cell phone attached to the stroller. Thankfully that's one toy she still enjoys. Now if only I could get her to like toy car keys as much as the real ones! Then I'd be in business!

Blue Baby
I really like using Flickr.com and find that participating in groups (pools where people upload photos containing a certain theme or particular subject) to be fun and rewarding. One neat group is the Kids and Babies Weekly Theme Pool. Pictures must be taken during that week, so it's sort of like a weekly photo assignment that gets me going and inspired. Last week's theme was "bright." I never did end up posting any of my pictures, but that's what prompted the pictures of Leah in her striped sweater.
This week's theme is "blue" and while I've been trying to get some good shots this one is a little tougher for me. Regardless, it did get me this cute picture of Leah in her sweet little denim dress. I looked for a blue shirt, but no dice. I figured the complete outfit plus the blue eyes was a no-brainer, but sometimes photography is an elusive art-form. Often the biggest surprises are the best photos and planned shots often fall flat.
I'll keep trying to get an image that truly represents this weeks theme and themes to come, but until then I'll just be happy getting inspired by the assignment itself and excited about the unlikely shots of Leah that I get from giving it a go!

Going for a ride in the car car...
I know lots of babies don't like getting into their car seat. For a while there, Leah wasn't a fan herself. That is until my Mom taught me what we affectionately call "the car car song." Let me tell you...this little ditty works WONDERS. After a little research, I believe this is Grammy's own personal adaptation of a Woody Guthrie folk song for children called "Riding in My Car." I haven't checked this with my Mom yet, but they have the same tune and the refrain is similar. Grammy sure is one hip lady.
I remember my friend Erin Jackson talking to her pug Gomez years ago, letting him know where we were going, when we'd be back, and that she loved him. She swore that it helped curb crazy puppy behavior when she was out. In a way, the car car song does the same. I also now know that this is called "transitioning." It helps Leah understand where we are headed, who will be with her in the car or when we get there, and what we'll be doing. Sometimes I even throw in a verse mentioning if it will be a long or a short trip. It has been so successful that Pete has also become an excellent practitioner of the car car song. Now when we go places Leah looks at us in the slightly amused manner shown in the picture, rather than screaming bloody murder, while bucking and thrashing to get out of the seat.
The moral of the story, if there is an activity your baby dislikes...make up a song about it. I've also noticed that the more ridiculous and silly you feel singing it, the more the baby enjoys it. Now I just need to come up with a special song for diaper changing! But for some reason I have a feeling that probably won't work as well...
