So yesterday Leah comes out of the kitchen with a dishcloth and just starts "cleaning" her little ride-on toy. I have to admit...it was adorable and completely unsolicited! I must also mention that she did not learn this from me, but is that really such a surprise? I like a clean house...but between Leah and Pete, work, and life sometimes cleaning ends up falling to the bottom of my list.
Leah's babysitter Fran on the other hand is a champion cleaner and she gets the credit for teaching Leah how to wield a rag with such style! Sometimes when Fran walks in Leah runs right over, grabs a dishtowel and starts rubbing some available surface, as if to say..."it's cleaning time!!" Leah even likes to pretend to wipedown her high chair tray all by herself every once in a while. I thought everyone would get a kick out of this shot...after all spring cleaning might be just around the corner for many of us. I know I'd like to do some deep house cleaning if I can find the time. But I thought Fran might get an extra-kick out of this one. It's amazing how the little activities we do with a child stick with them and become a part of their life. Have a great day everyone!

Bangs Trimmin'
So at our Strathmore playgroup yesterday, one of my neighbors recommended a kid's salon up North called Snipitz that I could take Leah too. You know the hair is out of control when the neighbors are telling you the kid needs it cut. After making a call to find out how much it costs to trim a 15 month old girl's bangs, I decided to go for it. It was the best $6.95 (+ tip) I've spent in a long time and worth every penny! I wouldn't doubt it if Leah ate $6.95 worth of animal crackers while we were there, so I really feel I got a deal!
All was going good (she was the only kid in the place) until they put the smock on her. Then there were some tears. But I busted out Lola, the stylist put a little cartoon on the TV screen about getting your hair cut, and by the time we got an animal cracker in each fist...she was putty in our hands. In the end the stylist praised her for sitting so still, I was delighted to have this first trip to an official salon over with, and Leah was just thrilled she could see now (without a wall of hair blocking her view!). She got a "temporary tatoo" as her prize (we never did put it on her) and was happy as clam for the entire ride home just looking at it and chatting to herself.
Pete was pleasantly surprised to see her new look when he walked in from work last evening. I'm hoping this trim will get us to Easter. After that, I'll be happy to go back and spend another $6.95. It's worth it to actually see my baby's beautiful face and blue eyes!!! Good job LeLe!

Pug Party!!!
I snapped this picture of Leah looking at my Chicago Pug Crawl photo album. I was lucky enough to attend the 2001 "Pug-O-De-Mayo" Pug Crawl with my friend Erin Jackson and her then pug Gomez. You'll have to check out pugparty.com if this sort of thing interests you. It was a great time and an event that I have amazing pictures from. Being that Leah LOVES dogs and animals in general...it was as if she came upon a treasure chest when she pulled this album off my shelf! She had fun looking at the pugs with sombreros, punk pugs, baby pugs, and many pug owners interacting with their pets.
Thankfully Leah can't ask for a pug puppy of her own yet! Her Daddy is a cat man and Mommy is not sure a pug would be the right breed for her. Not that it matters...we're all set with Lemmy! For now the neighborhood "woofs" as Leah calls them ("dog" is slowly working its way into her vocabulary too), will have to do!

Full Effect
Alright, so here's one where you can truly see Pete in all of his bald glory! You can also see a bit of Leah's reaction...she's a little confused but that quickly passed. Like I said yesterday, the crowds definitely frightened her. They ended up shaving everyone in the bar area which was very festive but crowded.
After that, I'd say the toughest part was actually watching Pete get shaved. The look on her face was "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY DADDY?!?!?!?" There were several female volunteers around me who were very sweet and everyone pitched in to comfort her. My friend and neighbor Sarah did a great job helping Leah to say "Bye, Bye, Hair!!!" and that seemed to make things a little easier. Leah didn't cry so much as just tense up and get agitated and in the end I was glad she could see it happen. I think we owe her quick recovery to the fact that she watched Pete go through this transition every step of the way. Future Leah haircuts shouldn't be a problem either since they won't be using an electric shaver on her. Thankfully, scissors will do just fine for trimming Leah's bangs.
We had a great time and we're still enjoying Pete's new look. He's actually gotten quite a few compliments! But he also said he'd be rich if he had a nickel for everyone who said "Lose a bet??" to him at work yesterday. Have a great day everyone. Wishing Springy weather your way!!!!

Bald is Beautiful
As promised, here's a picture from Pete's first St. Baldrick's event. Pete was lucky enough to get Thom, a stylist from the salon I go to, to do his shaving. As a result Pete got lots of tips on how to take care of his newly shorn scalp and what products to use. Thom also asked how I'd like to see the shaving start. "Straight down the middle for the first swipe?" he whispered and I nodded a big "yes!"
Overall we had a great time. It was crowded (which was what freaked Leah out more than anything), but we had some friends and neighbors there to support us which made it even more exciting. Several of us got great pictures, so as they get shared with me, I'll have to share them with you. I saw a few people had great shots of Leah's face as the entire this was going down. More details on that later, but Leah and Daddy are already back to normal. She doesn't seem bothered by his lack of hair at all.
This was such a great event and we so appreciate the generosity of our friends and family who opened their hearts and gave to this cause. At the top of the photo are pictures of the local children with cancer who were honored at this event. It was amazing to see people of all ages from the old to the young getting shaved. There were also some very brave women. Some guy even offered me $500 to shave my head next year! I'm too attached to my hair but I didn't even need to say anything as Pete put the kibosh on that quick. I guess one baldy is enough for the time being! Thanks again! More pictures to come.

Hair today, gone on Sunday....
Well, I thought this old picture was a good one for showing my husband's full head of hair. My Dad is still doing pretty well with his hair too as you can see here, but luckily for my Mom he won't be shaving it! Pete has done amazingly well gathering donations for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has donated, as well as to our friends, family and neighbors who took it upon themselves to tell others about Pete's efforts. For those who want to witness "the shaving," Pete's time is listed as 4:10 PM on Sunday in The Kitty Hoyne's dining room. You can give us a buzz (no pun intended!) for more info if needed. They recommend you get there a bit early just so you don't miss the shavee you're looking to see get "chrome-domed." Moral suppport for this event is just as important (to me especially!!!) as financial support. After all this is all about solidarity, so if you're up for a laugh (or some cringing!!!) and a Guinness...come on by!!! Leah will be happy to bury her head in your shoulder if she gets freaked out by the whole ordeal.
Anyway, thanks again everyone for your generosity. In a world where so much seems to be going wrong, it feels good to be part of something that contributes positively to our community and beyond. All of your donations, support and friendship mean a great deal to us. Both Pete and I have had friends in high school, college, and as young adults in their prime, whose lives were impacted by cancer. Some are amazing survivors and other friends have lost their lives. Haircuts and happy days
Number One: This baby needs a haircut! I realize this but am hesitant to do anything. The child does not enjoy the bangs trimming process and I'm afraid I just don't have the skills to cut her hair. I could take her to a professional but it just seems like such a waste of money. I'm not usually a penny pincher when it comes to hair, but perhaps it's more the nightmare scenario I envsion taking place in whatever hair establishment I do end up taking her to. So far, I've only trusted my Mom to get the job done and she has done a great job. But I'm not sure I can let this go until easter which is the next time we'll be home. Leah's a girl, so this really doesn't matter all that much. But if she only wore clips or bows...life would be so much easier!!! Perhaps she'd even be able to see through that wall of bangs?
One thing Leah makes a point of seeing is Blue's Clues. I'm not a big fan of babies and TV but I like Blue and Leah is smitten! Here's a shot of her in her TV stance. Yes, she prefers to lean and stand, rather than sit when she catches a program. It's strange I know...but that's Leah right? Enjoy the day everyone!

NO! SLEEP! Til Brooklyn! (or who knows what?!)
It has been 2 days and Leah's naps are WAY off. Yesterday she had a morning nap, but a completely napless afternoon. Not for lack of trying! Fran tried twice to get her down while she was here to no avail. I tried later when I got home (after letting her run around and get her ya-yas out) and she just sat up there and chatted away for an hour. Finally I gave up when the chatting turned to tears. Hopefully she at least got some restful quiet time.
Today we had MOPS which meant no morning nap. After that I had a WomenTIES seminar so Fran came again for a quick spell. This time Fran actually got Leah to sleep, but of course upon laying her down Leah popped right up again. She let her try and eventually make it to sleep but Leah never did. She just ended up calling "Waan?! Waaan?!" (That's Leahnese for "Fran") over and over. I arrived home and after a story time full of yawns and cuddles (this baby was TIRED!!!! She was literally walking into walls before I took her upstairs!) I put her down again. Well it's been and hour and she's still up there talking!!! No sleep for Leah!!!
I will say that Leah's system has been off (without going into too much detail, let's just say lots of lower GI activity) so there's that. But otherwise I can't figure out what this is all about. Just another Leah related challenge. She loves to throw me those curve balls!!! As people have been saying to me since she was a little infant "Hey!!! At least she sleeps through the night!" And yes, I do take comfort in that! But still...a little nap would be nice.

Lazy
I could not get inspired to upload pictures today so I decided to post the one from a year ago. The look on my face here describes how I still feel about being a mom: happy, content, delighted, and amazed by my child and what she has to offer. Sure, these days Leah seems lightyears away from this shot. She talks ("ball," "clue," "high five," "eye" and "me" are a few of the new words she's been using), she MOVES, and she definitely tests my patience. I've changed too...I'm a little more tired (even with a baby that sleeps well through the night...these toddler years are tough!) and a little busier with business. Nevertheless, this picture really does illustrate for me...the importance of slowing down and being present in one's own life. I want to enjoy these moments.
I also want to say thanks to everyone who has been so generous in donating to Pete's St. Baldrick's efforts. He appreciates it more than you all know and feels good about giving up his hair for such a worthy cause. I guess it's finally starting to set in with me because I'm starting to get a little scared. Oh well, I guess that's what it's all about though right? Identifying with the many children out there who lose their own hair due to cancer and its treatment. There's nothing to be scared about...Pete's will grow back. Let's just hope he doesn't scare the pants off Leah!

Monday on Sunday!
It's a busy week we've got ahead and with our Monday swimming lessons it's often tough to get to the computer. As a result we figured we'd post tonight.
I love this picture of Pete indulging in one of his favorite activities..."Chewing Leah's Tummy" as he calls it! I also figured it was a good picture to post as an accompaniment to this entry about how you can donate to Pete's big St. Baldrick's day event. I say this because it's questionable if Leah will even recognize Pete after he has his head shaved to raise money for pediatric cancer. Will she let some strange bald man near her? We'll have to wait and see. I do plan to have her front and center to see the whole thing go down if possible though. This way she can know it's her sweet and loving Daddy whose just undergone a bit of a change, rather than some random baldy who just took up residence in our house!

St Pat's and St Baldrick's?
Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone! I was commenting to Pete this morning just how much my celebration of this holiday has changed over the past few years. Back when I lived in Chicago I would take the day off, celebrating from morning til' night. Now, I'm lucky if I can even find something clean and green to wear! Regardless, those sorts of life changes are worth it when you get a little leprechaun like Leah as part of the deal. As you can see I found something green and cute for her to wear. The head gear didn't last long, but at least I got a picture.
In other news, Pete is signing up today to participate in the Saint Baldrick's Foundation Event here at Kitty Hoyne's in Syracuse on March 26. Pete is going to collect donations and have his head shaved to raise money for pediatric cancer. I for one have never seen Pete bald so I'm a little nervous, but it is a really worthy cause so Le and I are supportive. I'll follow up on the blog early next week letting you know how you can donate towards Pete's efforts. I know he would really appreciate it. I'll also be sure to post a "before" picture next Fri and an "after" shot the following Monday so you can share in the good-natured insanity. Games
I figured since we dedicated an entry to Auntie K the other day, that we'd pay a little tribute to Uncle Mark today. On our last visit, Mark turned Leah into his own little golf ball retrieval system. She'd sit on the floor and he'd putt to her and she'd bring the balls right back. Then Leah figured out that they make a nice banging sound when you drop them on the floor (always nice in an apartment building!) so we had to find a different activity. Still, Leah had fun learning all about the game of golf. If only Spring we're really here...Leah and I could be outside practing her swing! Now that would be nice!

Good Morning
We have our little morning routine down, although today's routine didn't feel quite right. Pete had to go into work very early and Leah and I missed having him toast up her french toast sticks and put her sippy cup of milk together. We figured we'd post this early morning shot just for Daddy. Maybe it will brighten his day and keep him going until he gets home to see us tonight.
Leah enjoys her mornings. After a little breakfast, we play in the living room for a bit. We're trying to abstain from the Today show and news in general lately, as the content can be pretty depressing some days. I'd rather not expose Leah to the sad and horrific images that get displayed over and over again. It's been hard to stick to that resolution. I do like to know what's going on in the world, but I think if I can keep it up Leah will benefit in the end. After we play and explore the house, check the weather outside our window and see what's going on with the neighborhood dogs and kids...we head up to Leah's room to read some stories. Then she's down for a nap. Speaking of which...it's getting to be about that time. Leah is still an early riser so her morning nap does take place on the earlier side. We hope all of you woke up on the right side of the bed today! Enjoy it (even if March is much more lion than lamb here today!!!).

Blast from the Past
Since we were married so close in time and had babies just nine short months apart, I am very close to my sister Kathleen these days. We help each other through baby feeding and sleeping issues. It's nice to have someone to call during the day if you need a friend to talk to, and it's even better when that friend knows exactly what you're going through...with a baby who won't nap, keeps spitting up, or is just overly cranky. I had to break this picture out of the archives as it brought all these nice thoughts to mind AND it cracked me up. Leah looks exactly as she does now. She just has a little bit less of a farmer tan and a lot more hair. She's nearly bald in this picture!

Experimentation
Leah is attempting to take a quick nap at this point before we have to leave for swim class. She has been practicing "blowing bubbles" in the bath although it usually results in some inhaled water and a few tears. Nevertheless this skill is coming along. Pete and I decided it might be a good idea to get her to practice in the tub, after a conversation I had with my Mom. I was pulling my hair out over the fact that Leah kept spitting her milk all over the place. I just thought she was enjoying a little "cause and effect" amusement, when my Mom mentioned "aren't you working on blowing bubbles in swimming?" Duh!!! Now Leah realizes that that sort of activity is reserved for water...when we are in the pool or the bathtub. I am so happy to have this spitting issue relatively solved (for the moment at least...you never know when it might start up again with a toddler!) and my carpets and Leah's clothes are thankful as well!

Sorry for another late day, but Leah and I have been taking it easy. Somebody took a pretty decent morning nap, which gave me some time for a shower. Life is GOOD! After a leisurely lunch we retired to the living room for some cookies and a tea party with our stuffed animals. Leah requested some tunes and I obliged with some Peggy Lee (it just seemed to fit!). Needless to say, my day was brightened even more when Leah started laughing hysterically at my helping her care bear through a dance routine to "Sweet Happy Life." Seriously, I don't know what she found so funny about it, but I don't think I've ever heard her giggle so hard for so long! I included the lyrics since they really do reflect my wishes for Leah. And I attached the following picture (did I blog this one before?) becuase I thought it showed Leah at her most chill, Soaking it all up and enjoying some time in the big chair. Have a great weekend! I promise to be more on time next week.

Life in the Fast Lane
Leah is fast! It doesn't matter if she's breaking free of the nursery at MOPS while I put her coat on and trying to run down the hall, scrambling up the stairs (and away from me) at our house, or booking it through the Ladies Locker Room at the Y. This little girl likes to MOVE. I thought this picture reflected just how hard it is for me to keep uo with her sometimes. And how cute is that little pink shoe?
Leah's moved up to the next size of Robeez now and I wonder if these shoes (complete with cool orange and pink butterflies) are even faster than her last pair! I only have a few minutes before my little speed demon wakes up from her nap ready to be set free for another morning of racing around and playing! As a result I better get a move on myself. My Princesses
Whew! It's just a late week for me. I can't seem to blog on time. Today was MOPS and Leah was SO TIRED when we got home at noon that she skipped lunch and went straight for a nap! I'm sure filled up on crackers, and cheerios and wagon wheels in the nursery, so that made it easier to put her to bed without eating. That, and the fact that she was exhausted. She kept hugging her coat and trying to snuggle up with it in my arms. Instead we just went up to her room, I switched out the coat for Lola, lowered the blinds and she was practically asleep before I closed the door. As her Daddy says, she must have "played hard!"

Another one from my stamp series!
Sorry for the late blog again today. I just can't keep up it seems. Still, the blog and updating it is important to me. It's something that keeps me going when I'm feeling a little blah or low. Maybe it's just that I can't wait for Spring to come, or the fact that I'm feeling very overwhelmed with work, house, volunteer projects and Leah's ever-changing personality and needs. I guess there is just something about seeing Leah's face up there and putting down my thoughts about her and my mothering experience, that makes me happy. Or at the very least eases my soul and brings me back down to earth. Now I know why my best friend (who is also a psychologist) Nicolle, always recommends journaling!
This online journal helps me to see that no matter how Leah growns and changes, she will always be my child. When the world gets overwhelming and confusing, one thing is consistent...the love of family (and good friends too)!

Red Carpet Musings
Luckily, I'm blogging late today which means I had a chance to check my email and find a note from my dear friend Amy. I stole today's title straight from the header of her email and picked this fashionable picture of Leah to feature today. Here she is in her sweet little poncho. Leah might not be dressed for Oscar night, but wouldn't she look cute hitting the bunny slope at Aspen? or perhaps taking in some baked brie and french onion soup at The Cottage in Lake Placid? But I digress...Oscar watching really is Mommy's main sporting event. and as for Leah, well she's taken to swimming like a fish!!!
Today was our second swim class and Leah did amazingly well! She actually surprised me by randomly dunking her face twice befor class even started. I can't even tell you how happy being in the water makes this baby. I also can't tell you how tired taking baby in the water makes this Mommy! I'm wiped. Between swimming and the bridal show I did yesterday I can barely think straight. I managed to keep my eyes open for much of the Oscars thanks to some excellent snacks provided in the form of samples by my friend Jen from She Takes the Cake. Who says bridal shows aren't productive? Thankfully the most important part of the show (the clothes!) comes first. Leah thought Sandra Bullock looked very pretty in her stylish gown with pockets. Daddy was NOT a fan of Charilze Theron's extra-big bow. Mommy's favorite was Rachel Weisz, who managed to look elegant while pregnant. Something I'm not quite sure I ever managed to do while pregnant with Leah. Nevertheless I love to see how fashion designers dress stars with-child. Apparently Narciso Rodriguez is good at it, as he made Weisz look stunning and always dressed Sarah Jessica parker well during her pregnancy. BVut enough from me...I better get back to my little swim student. She's up from her nap and ready to play! Enjoy the day!

Childproofing
I snagged this quietly lit shot lastnight while Leah tried to help her Daddy with his "Honey-Do" list. I've been begging Pete to install drawer locks on our living room end tables ever since Leah figured out how to open them and blindly (she's not tall enough to see into the drawers) rifle through their contents. She always emerges with a pen or screwdriver, or some other tool that can double as a weapon ("if you hold it right"....another little nod to Ani DiFranco there!).
Anyway, poor Leah...there she was happily assisting in a project that will ultimately lead to her own frustration. I can hear her now, looking at Pete and I, shaking her fist and saying to herself in a Russian accent "Moose and Squirrel!!!!!!!!" We've foiled her dastardly attempts to get into trouble yet again!
Childproofing might be a pain, but it is necessary. We won't turn our whole house into a fortress of safety. I'm not even sure we can. Besides Leah does need to learn that there are boundaries and to exhibit some modicum of self-control around them. Still there is much to be done, but I don't mind. Look at how sweet Pete and Leah look here, talking with each other, learning, and just being together. It warms a Mommy's heart, almost as much as seeing those drawer locks finally installed!

Kisses
Leah's new found skill is kissing! She doesn't quite have it down yet (otherwise I would have caught a shot of her in the act) but it's getting there. I've been trying forever to get her to blow kisses. I even enlisted everyone else in the entire world to try and help with this too. The funny thing is, what finally put her over the edge was (OF COURSE!) Lemmy!
Both Pete and I are well practiced at making kisses and clicks, to get Lemmy to come to us. Well it didn't take long for Leah to catch on. Now, when she wakes up in the morning she immediately puckers and starts making all sorts of smoochy sounds and tongue clicks, trying to entice Lemmy into her room. The cute thing is, it works! And it's fun to see how Leah lights up with pride at using her newly discovered ability.
As a result, everyone around Leah wins! Grandma Barb got some goodnight kisses blown to her last weekend when she came to spend some time with Leah. Pete was thrilled lastnight when Leah actually leaned in and planted one on him. Thankfully she still limits how many she'll give out. You can't be giving them away for free right? Have a great day!

Busy Day
We've got a busy day today so this won't be long. I did want to post this picture of Leah and her cute little Hanna Andersson slippers though. This weeks theme on Flickr is Red, so I quickly grabbed a few shots of Leah's feet, one of my favorite parts of this bubbly little girl. They're rarely still, so it's tough to catch a shot of these cuties taking a break. I love the way her "indoor shoes" are worn and comfy looking, and how they hug her chubby little feet. My favorite color on my favorite girl.
