Tree Trimmin' Faves and Hometown Haunts

some older fave ornaments

Behind it is an old favorite from my oldest and dearest friend Marisa. It's a Bloomingdale's ornament from our days living in NYC. The two off to the right are new aquisitions with lots of old memories. They are from Pete's Grandparents' Tree.

There are so many favorites I can't list them here! And that's just my tree, I'm talking about. Don't let me near my parents' tree! I get misty eyed looking at half of them, and get so excited when I find a new one that I've never seen before. I had to laugh, when I was home helping my Mom decorate her tree. It seemed like every time I picked an ornament up and exclaimed "I love this one! Where did you get it?" She'd say "Charlene."

My Mom's friend Charlene is a fathful Sugar Hiccups reader and also knows her way around a Christmas ornament! She made another one of the favorites on my tree, wonderful little spider ornament based on a German Christmas legend.

Thanks to Charlene, Cynthia, John, and so many of the other people who read and comment regularly. Glad to hear the libations at the Gilded Otter were good John. There are so many places I love in New Paltz! The Harvest Cafe where I had my rehearsal dinner and baby shower and Bacchus where I've had many a good meal and good conversation with good people over the years. Much like my love for ornaments, I coud go on and on when it comes to fun things to do in the Hudson Valley. Not surprisingly, most of them include food and drinks. Of course there's also the Gilded Otter, where the only thing better than the beer is the view of the Shawangunks. It's a good thing I've got a little cold and have confined myself to tea for the time being...otherwise I think I might need a beer.

Holiday Hugs!

Toddler Pals

I had several orders of business to take care of during my visit, but topping my list was seeing my friend Cynthia, who won't be home when we're back in the Hudson Valley for Christmas next week.

As I mentioned in my last post, I love Christmas. And for me Christmas would not be complete without a visit to Cyn's. Besides having one of the most beautiful trees, her home always exudes such a cozy feeling of comfort and joy! We exchanged presents, drank tea and ate some fresh baked banana chocolate chip muffins. Pretty much the same thing we've done every holiday season since we were 16, only with way more interruptions.

I was joking with my Dad that Cynthia and I usually only get to talk about 1-3 things when we visit these days! Note to Cyn: we are going OUT to lunch or to the tea room on one of my next trips. The men can stay with the kids and we can get a few more hours of chatting in!

Still, the interruptions are of the best variety. Leah needs Max to show her the family zoo (lizard, snake, rabbit, fish...). Somebody needs hot cocoa, or marshmallows, or muffins, or milk. Everyone wants to go outside and play in the snow (thank goodness Cynthia stockpiles winter clothing...she's like a regular LL Bean!). And of course we had to stop and grab our cameras when Leah and Beckett decided to ham it up for us in front of the Christmas tree!!

You might remember Leah and Beckett back in their baby days. I loved them then, but it's even more exciting to see them now...playing together, talking, and even hugging. We had a great time, as always, visiting with Cynthia and her boys. It was a snowday and school was closed, so we got to see everyone except Rhett. No worries, we'll catch him next time when he and Pete will be signed up for babysitting duty.

Happy holidays everyone, I promise to post a bit more before 2007 runs out!

Mommy, do you think Santa could bring us some more time for Christmas?

Thankfully, my kids are not yet so insightful that they are asking me such questions. This is a good thing, as it means I've got a few more years to work out my schedule and priorities before they truly start to notice that there are certain times of the year (OK maybe it's more often than not) when I am a whirlwind of activity, busy, busy, busy, so much going on, and maybe even getting a little cranky because of it.

I am a Christmas fanatic. I have always loved Christmas. I was the teenager who would get in my PJs—complete with warm, fluffy, big 80's style socks, and sip tea, cuddled on the couch or floor just staring at the tree. Sometimes I'd read books or write in a journal, but mostly it was just a cover for my geeky tree gazing. And that was just the before picture. After Christmas I'd do the same thing, but with the added benefit of presents. I'd sit under the tree and check out all of my awesome new stuff, over and over again.

I'm not all that different today. I still am a sucker for a pretty ornament. I use candy canes as stirrers for my cocoa, I still feel a flutter of excitement when we light our advent wreath each night or when I open one of those little doors on an advent calendar. Even in my TINY apartment in Chicago, I would get and decorate my TINY $40 Charlie Brown tree every year. And if I wasn't bad before, I am even worse now that I have kids! Every opportunity I can snag to dress the girls in a little Christmas outfit, I do. I DVR Christmas specials and make sure Leah gets hot cocoa when she comes in from playing in the snow.

I bake (or at least plan to bake) my traditional and totally international array of Christmas cookies. Pfeffernüsse from Germany (for Pete), Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti (for my Mom and my Mother in Law), Slovakian or Polish apricot-filled Kolachy (for me and my Dad...who thinks these cookies are even better as breakfast), Pepparkakor from Sweden (for Devon of course, and me too since I like to have a few when I'm drinking my glögg, and Spritz (the recipe I have says they're Norwegian, but who cares...every country loves BUTTER!).

Pete and I have even developed a tradition where our kids get to see Santa twice in the season...without ever having to go to the Mall! The first opportunity was over this past weekend at Pete's company Christmas party for employees' children. As you can see, Leah had a good time. Don't mind the surprised face, it's just there because I had to give her a different cue, something other than "smile." "Smile" just illicits a pained expression that says "Santa, you're stepping on my toe!" not "I'm so happy you're bringing me a trampoline!" which is pretty much what she said to the big guy.

Even though my attempts at an organized Christmas (yes....I go to that link and attempt yearly to follow the schedule!!!) are never very on target, we still manage to have fun. I long to be less busy, crazy and I'll admit it maybe even a little less stressed. And perhaps I'll get there one day. But for now, my main goal is to keep the holidays focused on the reason for the season and to maintain that sense of magic and excitement I always felt at Christmastime...as a child, teen, college student (remember those personalized Christmas cards I used to make Nic?!), single girl in the city, and now as a wife and Mom.

I may be crazy busy, but this stuff is important so I'll make you guys hold me accountable: I promise myself to spend at least one night this season cozy by the fire admiring my tree. I won't check email or write Christmas cards. I will chill out Christmas style. Got that people? Alright, it's been blogged so now I'll have to do it. Now if I could just find that time I was looking for....

Bonjour!

"I'm an artist!"
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Sorry I've been away for a while. Believe it or not, when I neglect to post, I probably end up missing this blog more than anyone! I've said it before in the past, but "Sugar Hiccups" really is a great and much needed outlet for me. Posting allows me to reflect on our exeriences and daily life in a way that helps me to "see" things about Leah and Aislin and most importantly myself, that I might not otherwise catch.

On the other hand, both girls are growing at such a fast rate that I also feel required to be FULLY present during my interactions and time with them. This is harder than it sounds and it leaves less time for blogging (and working, and resting, cooking, and showering...the list goes on!).

Every day Leah talks more, and listening and talking back...man, that takes energy. I can hear certain people laughing at their computers right now..." Does she remember all the times she's talked MY ear off?!?" To that I will respond, yes...yes I do and I thank you for your patience with me. Aislin, is walking and starting to talk as well! She says: Mama, Dada, Night-Night, Baby, Milk and More! I think she can also sayapproximations of Aisy, Lemmy, and Ball, but I haven't quite confirmed that yet. All this talking is AWESOME. I am so lucky to be able to communicate with these guys, but it comes with a price tag. Neither girl wants to let me speak on the phone EVER. If I slip out of the room for a minute to shoot someone an email...both girls are right there two seconds later, Aislin crawling up my legand Leah asking me questions. My girls' communication skills are really starting to cramp Mommy's communication style.

So there you have it...that's why I've been out of the loop recently. That, plus everyone in our house was super sick for a while there. When I look at the picture above I realize that maybe Leah is more like me than I ever imagined. When I put this outfit on her (Shout out to the Herreras!) the first thing she shouted was "I'm an artist!!!" See what a berét will do to a girl? Then when I look again and admire Leah in all her pink and grey wool preppiness, I am reminded of the outfits I sported in college. Outfits that would've worked fine for a business or english class, but didn't exactly exude that "Art School Girl of Doom" look that was so hip back then...or anti-hip...I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Let's just hope Leah doesn't follow in Mom's footsteps completely...destined to be forever torn between her inner Mary Tyler Moore and that Art School Girl of Doom persona. Regardless, I will forever love this picture...once I see past the little bits of me, I easily envision Leah off to pick up some french bread and brie at her favorite boulangerie before heading back to her Paris apartment to try on her favorite clothes and do some painting. OK...so maybe there's still some of me left in there...

So, a dinosaur, a bunny, and a dragon walk into a bar...

Halloween Parade
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Sounds like the beginning of a funny joke right? Well...there is no joking when it comes to our neighborhood Halloween Parade. The kids (OK...maybe it's the adults) take this annual event very seriously. There is a small impromptu marching band (the leader told me next year we are going to work on an all-kazoo rendition of "Thriller"), spectators come out from their homes to cheer the little ones on, and it's a chance to see all the awesome halloween regalia in daylight.

You can't tell from her face, but Leah was pretty pumped to be out in her sweet bunny costume. I personally enjoyed watching the stare-down between Leah and her friend Pete (he's the dino on her right with the brown belly and cool sneaks). I don't think she wanted him to get to close. I'm guessing that's cause dinosaurs eat rabbits don't they?

Not only did Leah love the parade but she trick-or-treated her little cottontail off on Halloween night!!! Even Aisy went out as a chick with daddy and Leah. There is still a big bowl of candy on top of our fridge but Leah is determined to work her way through it, by asking me for a piece every other waking moment of the day!

In a brilliant strategic move, Leah has decided to go into full-on potty-training commitment mode. We are now wearing underwear during the days at home!!!! The sticker chart we have been using has definitely served as motivation, but I think it is the possiblity of candy that has encouraged her to go beyond her previous efforts and really decide to go for it. Of course Dora-themed (thanks Fran!), funky tie-dyed (so totally New Paltz Grammy), and Disney Princess underwear totally help as well.

I hope everyone had a delightful Halloween. My girls are already getting geared upfor Thanksgiving. The holidays can never come around to early here!

Picture day

Walkin' away...
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
So today was picture day at Leah's school. Want to know when I figured that out? How 'bout when I decided to pick up the form off the floor of my car this morning as I strapped the girls in to take Leah to school. The same form that fluttered to the floor a week and a half ago after dropping Leah off at school. That's how fast life is moving these days. So fast I can't even pick up a piece of errant paper, read a few sentences or stop to drink a glass of water. I realize I totally have to work on that last one. Staying hydrated should be a priority as it contributes greatly to health...but I digress.

I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining. The picture day thing really didn't matter to me. Pete was away on business lastnight and wrangling these two really zapped me. Seriously, I don't know how single parents do it. They must be so strong! Leah wasn't dressed in her Sunday finest, but then again it wasn't Sunday and it wasn't her worst outfit either. Luckily, I had Leah's haircut last friday (she looks so grown up!) and she was dressed in her usual put-together yet casual looking school fare.

And let's ask ourselves, do I really need a formal portrait to commemorate her year in the toddler development program? Probably not. I snap enough of my own portraits as it is. Besides, Leah can't be relied upon to smile appropriately anyway. It's either the biggest "CHEEEEEZZZZZZ" you've ever seen, which makes her eyes disappear completely or she looks so serious, it's as if she's about to be put in time out. Perhaps the photographer can pull something out of her that I can't. Maybe Leah really "saves the drama for her mama!" and will pose and smile sweetly for the camera at school? We'll see.

Last but not least (before I crumble from exhaustion) I chose this picture of Aisy, becuase it truly personifies what I'm feeling these days. Life with toddlers moves at the speed of toddlers. And if you didn't already know it, that HAS to be almost as fast as light speed! Much like Aislin, I feel like the days are in perpetual foward motion, careening towards the next big thing (or crash landing!).

As I wobble speedily through the dwindling days and weeks of 2007, I hope I can do it with as much excitement, bravery, and sheer joy as Aislin does. I might be downright tired, but I never want to stop learning from these girls. The older I get, the more I realize my goal is to be more like them...never afraid of falling, always curious to know what's around the next corner, and giggling madly while I do it!

Here's....a book?...in your eye!

I'll admit it, my girls have been driving me a bit crazy this week. First off, let me say that our favorite babysitter Fran is away. The lady only takes one 2 week vacation a year and BOY does she deserve it! Nevertheless, I was once again reminded just how much that one day a week (usually from around 9-2) when Fran is here with the girls is good for me as a mom, business owner, friend, wife, the list goes on. I get a lot done during that time and it really frees me up to be "fully present" and more patient with the girls the rest of the week. I'm more organized, caught up on work, and probably a whole lot more pleasant when I get that time "to myself."

In addition to all that, our spirited little Leah has really been testing boundaries with both me and Pete lately. There is more bouncing, jumping, talking, screaming (with joy, incredulity, etc), asking, telling, moving, singing, defying, and just general non-stop activity that goes on with that girl than I could heve ever imagined before I was her parent. Don't get me wrong, the girls and I have been having a whole lot of fun doing nothing this week. We took the donations from the guests at Aisy's birthday party over to the womens' shelter we wanted to support. We ate a picnic lunch outside the other day, Leah and I made muffins and we all did a ton of playing.

Even with Leah pushing limits and Fran being on vacation, all would have been perfect had I not mistakenly poked Leah in the eye with the corner of the Madeline book we were about to read before settling down for naptime on Wednesday. Curse you Ludwig Bemelmans!!! Who honestly just may be my favorite children's writier/illustrator ever. Thankfully, I don't think this unfortunate accident ruined him for me forever!

Can you say "Mommy guilt?!" I felt terrible. Leah would go in and out of being fine and playing, then would suddenly drop to the floor kicking and screaming saying her eye hurt. Several hours later we were at the pediatrician. Leah had a fluorescein solution put into her eye by our wonderful pediatrician. Then he shone a black light on it. The fluorescein glows green under the light and will work itself into any abrasions on the cornea, making them very easy to see. Turns out Leah indeed had a corneal abrasion. Sounds scary, but luckily Leah's was superficial. The only cause for concern was it's location, right over her pupil. Not wanting to mess around with a 2 year olds eyesight, we were sent home with an antibiotic cream we had to stick in her eye before bed that night.

Let me tell you guys...getting medication into a child's eye is not easy! It took both physical strength and mental agility.Trying to talk this out with a two year old was pretty hilarious! I half expected her to say "No dice Mommy and Daddy!!!"...which is pretty much what she said but not in so many words.

Yesterday we were instructed to keep her home from school and the pediatrician set us up with an appointment with an ophthalmologist (right during nap time...which made for a ROUGH visit...but I had to take what I could get). Amazingly, his diagnosis was that it was healed completely! As difficult as it was for her (and for me...my heart nearly broke when she told the pediatrician "Mommy poked me in the eye!!!) the girl was a trooper...putting up with having all sorts of solutions and antibiotics put in her eyes and then being attacked with bright lights by doctors. She performs well for professionals (much better than she behaves for her Mom...but that's to be expected right?). Mercifully, Leah has asked me to read her "Madeline" at least five times in the past two days, which makes me think she forgives me...that and the fact that today she told me "You're my favorite Mommy." Gotta love that.

I think this week has finally caught up with me, and now I'm sick with flu-like aches and pains, a heaviness in my chest, and just feeling pretty terrible. But I'll end it this post with Leah's favorite last lines from "Madeline." They seem to comfort both of us in a funny little way...

"Good night little girls!
Thank the lord you are well!
And now go to sleep"
said Miss Clavel.

And she turned out the light --
and closed the door --
and that's all there is --
There isn't any more.

Zoe and the zany pair

Zoe and the zany pair
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
As many of you know, we traveled to Sesame Place this weekend. It was a BLAST! Leah even surprised me by using the term "blast!" herself, to express her joy at being on "Sesame Street" with her cousin Clare and Aunti K and Uncle Mark. Oh, and Daddy and Mommy and Aisy too...

Leah and Clare enjoyed our "Breakfast with Elmo" a great deal. Zoe was a big hit, and Elmo was too. Leah's freaky fear of extra-large TV characters did kick in a bit once Ernie and Bert came by our table. She still managed to give Bert a high-five and the only one I didn't manage to get her picture with was Big Bird. Clare on the other hand seems to love the oversized costumed folk! Just look at her cuddled right up in Zoe's hand. Clare also got her picture with Cookie Monster and a new character for us old-timers, Abby Caddabby, Sesame Street's resident fairy-in-training.

The best part for Leah I think was the RIDES!!!!! She went on Grover's "Vapor Trail" roller coaster with Pete 4 TIMES. I think he almost had more fun than she did. Leah also loved the Tea Cups, Big Bird's Balloon Race, The Humungous Slide (not the ride's real name), and the free fall drop style ride. Clare was not a fan of that last one, but the faces she was making did give me a little chuckle down on the ground. Overall, it was a great day. The lovely fall weather was perfect...no water rides (which was fine with me!) and less lines. K had free tickets which made it even better! Thanks Auntie K!!!!

Also, here's a Hey Pretty Cupcake update. HPC Christmas ornaments are now available in their Etsy Shop! You can see and read all about the cupcake themed Christmas tree illustration I created for this year's HPC's ornaments at bridedesign.blogspot.com The blog entry also has link that can take you to the shop if you are interested in purchasing one. I know I would be tickled red and green to spot my ornament on some of my friends' and family's trees this holiday season!

Number 2 Turns Number 1!!

Frosting nose
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Tomorrow is the official day, October 9. Aisy will be 1 year old! She's like a whole new baby. Sure, she's still a mama's girl, she's sensitive and she wants what she wants when she wants it! But, she's also walking around like crazy, babbling up a storm, and as you can see from the picture, she is demolishing entire cakes with her bare hands (OK and he teeth too!).

This weekend we had a little neighborhood party. The grandparents were all in attendance and Auntie D and Uncle Mike came too! This shot was art directed once again by D...who was oh so crafty and placed some frosting on Aislin's nose. There are many more shots to share with you, even if Dev's pictures are way better than mine! I was too busy trying to keep Leah's grubbly, little paws off the BIG cake. Once again, my friend Jen OUT DID herself and wowed the crowd with a fantastic caramel apple confection covered in chocolate fondant and decorated beautifully to match the green and brown daisy invitations I created for my own little Aisy daisy. I won't even go into the cupcakes that were piled high with icing and subsequently devoured by the neighborhood children. Mmmmm.....

We had planned to have the party outside, but showers of rain upon arrival brought everyone inside. That was fine. My vacuum needed some use anyway. It was a tight squeeze but no one seemed to mind and Aislin had the best time of all I think. I have a meeting tomorrow, but my mind will be with my little one. I can't believe it has been a year already. She's my buddy...always hanging off me, racing towards me or clamoring for my attention. We'll you've got it kid! Happy early birthday!

Websites, winning, and weather!

Totally Toddler Field Trip
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Just wanted to share with everyone that my third baby (that would be my business website) has finally arrived!!!

Check out bridedesign.com here!

It was a long process. All in all, this thing has been in the works in various forms for about twice as long as it takes to have a human baby. I'm glad it's complete (for now). Certain items will need to change as time goes on, and of course I will continually add images of my work to the gallery. It's definitely focused more towards my custom work and down the road I will need to add more to this site, or create other sites that focus on certain other areas of the business. I'm sure at some point I will want feedback on it, but for now I just need to bask in the glow of this thing being put to bed! In other words, I'll take compliments on it but please hold back on constructive criticism until I'm past my current state of mental exhaustion.

I'm also delighted to be one of the runners-up in heyprettycupcake.com's artist collaboration contest. My friend Jen encouraged me to enter and I sent in several illustrations I created of famous american buildings done as cupcakes. I've tentatively titled the series "Cupcake City" and I hope to add more illustrations to it in the future. You can view them in the illustrations set on my flickr stream. As a runner up, I won a collaboration contract with Hey Pretty Cupcake, and they will be turning my illustrations into all sorts of nifty products. I'll keep you all posted on when my stuff is added to their site and available for purchase (just in time for the holidays I hope!!!)

Speaking of pretty cupcakes, Aislin's birthday is next Tuesday. This weekend we are having various family members visit and are hosting a little neighborhood party to celebrate Aislin's big 1st birthday. I think we'll even host the party outside since it is supposed to be downright HOT out. Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. Central, NY has more than enough cold and winter to go around, so I'll take this San Diego type weather if that's what's being given to me. Still, it's had me a little on edge. I can't get into the Autumn mood when we had to finally break down and put the AC on yesterday! As a nod to the weather we've been having I thought I'd include this shot of Leah picking (or rather eating!) apples on her 85° field trip day. As I mentioned in my last post. She had a blast. What's next breakfast with Santa in our bathing suits??? Come on Autumn!!!!

Busy Girls and Birthdays

Hello Autumn
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Hello All! Sorry it has been forever since my last post but there has been a lot going on here. This week I assisted in Leah's classroom which was exhausting, eye-opening, very interesting and fun all at the same time. I also escorted Leah on her first field trip, which happened to be on my birthday. We went apple picking and I must say it was adorable to see an orchard full of preschoolers and toddlers enjoying themselves. Aislin came along for the ride of course. I dread the day that girl refuses to go into, or when she finally grows out of, the baby bjorn! I'm not sure which will come first but it's going to be tough. Aislin is taking more unassisted steps each day and I know it won't be long before I have 2 crazy sprinting girls, running in opposite directions OF COURSE!

The weather was unseasonably hot! I like my apple picking days to be crisp and cool, but this was just downright wrong! The thermometer was clocking in at +85°! Still we made it through and the girls were pretty merciful on me (I'm guessing becuase I begged Leah to behave since it was my birthday). She and one of her classmates had fun sitting under a tree and eating apples together. It was just about the cutest thing I've ever seen. Leah went wild for the tractor ride and Miss Independent insisted on carrying her FULL 1/4 peck bag. That may not sound like much but it was pretty heavy for her!

My birthday wound down with a trip to our new conveyor belt sushi restaurant. It was such a gift to get some time alone with Pete and it was even better that we could spend that time doing one of our favorite activities: EATING SUSHI! The conveyor belt sushi concept is great. There's no need to order (for us at least) just jump on that "sushi train" and ride it until you can't stomach another bite! We had some amazing treats, one roll was quick-cooked tempura style (deep friend yumminess outside/raw sushi goodness inside) and was topped with some crazy, spicy, hot crab meat piled super high. Every once in a while the sushi chefs will suprise you by plopping an item right smack dab in front of you on the belt...as if to say "Eat this, before it goes around and someone else snags it. You won't be sorry!" It was the perfect date night for me and Pete and a great end to a wonderful birthday.

I must say, I did spend a moment on my special day to contemplate the differences between my 24th and 34th birthdays (and boy were they different!). I got such rave reviews after Mother of the Bride vs. Mother of the Flower Girl, so back by popular demand here's my comparison list:

24th Birthday vs. 34th Birthday!

24th birthday: Surprise birthday dinner at an Italian restaurant in Chicago, thrown lovingly by my friend Kaylin, with one adult guest acting like a toddler (I don't even remember the girl's name, how sad is that?!?).
34th: Toddler-free, sushi dinner in Syracuse, lovingly paid for by Pete and I didn't need to learn anyone's name or even order!
WINNER: As much as I LOVE Chicago, I still gotta go with 34th.

24th: My friends chipped in and paid $20 to have my palm read on the street by a man in a fez. My future was so apparently so dreary they actually apologized afterwards.
34th: Paid $1.50 for my toddler to have the time of her life picking apples, plus .39 for a pumpkin, and $1.00 for maple candies to bribe her back to the car.
WINNER: 34th

24th: Restlessly slept alone on a friend's cold, hard apartment floor while being repeatedly woken up by noisy housemates
34th: Peacefully slept with Pete on my feather bed without getting woken up by Aisy!
WINNER: 34th

To be fair, #24 is probably one birthday that's pretty close to the bottom of the list, most likely due to a combination of bad timing and my own semi-bummin' attitude at the time. It was in no way due to my friends efforts. In fact, I still have several very fond memories of that night. I had a cute outfit on (shallow I know, but true :), Kaylin organized the heck out of that little shindig with much care, the nice bottle of German wine my friend John gave me, and the hug from my friend Jen when the fez guy's fortune nearly made me cry. Thankfully, none of that stuff really came true. When I used to play Barbie as a little girl, I always imagined Barbie was 24...it seemed so old and mature back then (yikes!). Needless to say, I think I had some unrealistic expectations for my life, career, and even birthdays back in '97 based on that "barbie perfect" assumption. I mean..."where was my Ken!?!?!" I don't think I would have ever expected that such a regular, old, day in my shoes, would be a birthday that comes close to the top of my list. I guess that's what's great about the gift of another year...all the surprises that are yet to come!

School Days

School Days
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Well, today was the first official day. As most of you know Leah is off to the Lab School at Syracuse University two days a week for their toddler program. I snapped this shot at one of (the many) "get acquainted" sessions the school held to help the kids transition to their new school routine.

Anyone who has met Leah knows that she was and is READY!!! All her readiness made these quick-visit, getting to know you type days rather painful. She would pitch a monster fit everytime we'd get ready to head home. "I want to stay at school!!!! I want to play on the playground!!! Don't take me!!!!"

Gotta love that last one she throws in there like I'm abducting her. Yes Leah, I'm abducting you....taking you back home to eat a yummy lunch of whatever it is you'd like, where you can nap in your warm, comfy, bed with Lola and later play with your friends. Goodness, after tantrums like that I'll gladly take a nap if you don't want to kid!

Needless to say, Mommy here was totally ready herself for the first 9-12 full morning of school. I was slightly consoled by the fact that while other children cried at drop off, mine just asked me when I'd return, pecked me on lips, gave me a big hug and was off playing without a care in a matter of minutes. Still, I remained humble in my knowledge that it's the other end of the school experience that sets Leah off.

Today she was better when we left to head home, but still resisted, gave some attitude, and was generally ornery about the situation. This would all be much easier if I did not have to hold Aisy while dealing with this (which is like holding a squirming 19 lb sausage while trying to wrangle a crying 30 lb trout out of water...all that flipping and flopping!!!). One day at a time though right? Let's hope that each time we leave school LeLe's a little quieter, a bit more compliant, and increasingly cooperative.

I think she will be. As far as school goes, it seems she's an angel (just look at the picture), a sassy, talkative, animal craker inhaling, ball of energy, sort of angel, but an angel nonetheless!!!!

Bloggin' outside the box!

When I started blogging my only desire was to keep family and friends updated on Leah and then on Leah and Aislin...the dynamic duo! Over the years (and I can't believe it's been YEARS, but it has) I've come to love blogging. This blog has been a creative outlet, a vehicle for venting, as well as a forum where I could ask (or answer) all sorts of questions on parenting, music, life, photography, travel and so much more.

I have stayed true to my desire to keep this blog personal, and when I wanted to see what sort of benefits I could gain for my business through blogging, I started a new blog just for that. My company website bridedesign.com is being finished as we speak and in the meantime my business blog bridedesign.blogspot.com has filled in as my main online presence. I've learned that business blogging isn't all that different (in some ways!) from personal blogging. Posts allow me to keep customers updated, talk about new offers and deals, and highlight product news. Friends, clients, fellow business vendors, family, and even a few strangers who delurked back in January, have all encouraged and supported me a great deal when it comes to blogging. I realized that I enjoy it so much I figured if I ever saw an opportunity to blog or write in a more public forum I would take it. I also thought it would be great to get paid (whether in "click-throughs" to my business sites, ad space, or $$$....the latter would be REALLY nice someday!) for doing yet another activity I love. Recently I sent a few samples off to a website that aims to nurture and support entrepreneurs who are also mothers. They were looking for monthly columnists and I figured mothering and business ownership are two areas I actually know a little bit about so maybe I should jump in and see what the water is like.

Lo and behold, I've been retained as the new Style Mama at mommyscompany.com. My first column went live over the weekend and I'm so thrilled I had to share the news with everyone. Of course my first love will always be Sugar Hiccups: Life with Leah and AIslin, so don't worry I'll be posting there for as long as my daughters will let me!! But I'm excited to have a new home on the web where I can write about things beyond stationery and diapers. Believe me, I'm sure those items will come up in a Style Mama column at some point (OK well, maybe not together), but for the most part I'll be writing about fashion, beauty, design trends, home interiors, music, culture and more...as it applies to parentrepreneurs...specifically Moms. Anyway, if you are so inclined stop by mommy's company. Scroll down to the icon (which yes, I know, looks NOTHING like me AT ALL) and that will lead you to the latest article. Thanks again Sugar Hiccup fans for being the best little corner of the blogosphere ever! It's because of you guys that I even realized I have a voice worth sharing.

Summer's Last Days

OK, so my friend John DeMott just gave me a talking to about the sad lack of blog entries this month. I know, posts have been few and far between, but now that I know how much we're missed I'll be sure to post more as the school year gets rollin. With Leah in school two mornings a week, I'm hoping I'll have just a tad more free time that I can use for things like showering (yay!), working off this baby weight, more quality alone time spent playing with Aisy, working, and yes....blogging! In fact, I may soon be blogging on a larger scale...but more on that in a future post. A woman's gotta have a few secrets!

One thing I'll neer keep under wraps is my love for my two crazy little girls. I actually found myself thinking " I guess I don't need to take my kids to Sears Portrait Studio!" when looking at today's shot. Not a bad portriat of Aisy. I like what's she's wearing (Can't go wrong with a Lilly!), and between her breathing on the camera moments before (yes, that's how I got that coveted fuzzy Cybill Shepherd on Moonlighting look!) and some Photoshopping, I think it came out pretty good. AND I didn't have to pay $150 bucks for a package that included the 9x12 version, that let's face it...no one ever really wants. Seriously, it doesn't matter how cute your kid is, you don't need to look at them that large. Besides, turn to your right and there's the real-life version. Much more vivid and realistic right? Just use your brain to photshop the peanut butter and jelly off their face. See, now you've just saved on sitting fees and overpriced software!

I often feel guilty that I have never taken either girl to have their portraits taken. I had a wonderful professional photographer take pictures of Leah when she was a newborn. I love those shots, but that's been it ever since. Pete just doesn't see any reason to pay for it when I take as many pictures as I do. After re-reading the last paragraph I'm guessing he's rubbed off on me too! Regardless, Perhaps I can convince him to take all the money we've saved on professional portraiture and put it into a fund for the new Digital SLR Camera I want. I'm thinking I want to stick with Canon and get a Digital Rebel XT (besides...doesn't it have the most awesome name? It sounds like it will make my pictures extra rad!), but I'd go for a Nikon too. We'll see...

See DeMott...I squeaked an extra entry into August for you! See you in September everyone!!!

Mother of the flower girl

The last of the McKenna sisters has finally been married off. While I'm delighted for my amazing and beautiful sister Devon (and her new husband Mike. We LOVE Mike!!!) and a bit relieved for my parents and their finances, I'm personally a little sad. I LOVE weddings. So much so that I decided to build my business around them. Big or small, traditional or different, elegant or wild and crazy, there is no other celebration like a wedding. I know there will possibly be some marriages down the road for certain close friends, my brother, and other family members I deeply care about. But I guess I had just been looking forward to Devon's big day for so long that I'm a little bummed that it's over. Thankfully there are so many great memories from the day (and from the awesome rehearsal dinner thrown by the Summersgills the night before)!

One thing I won't soon forget was the crazy adventure of being both a Matron of Honor and Mother of a Flower Girl. Mercifully, I was allowed to split these duties with my sister Kathleen, also MOH and MOFG Clare. And we were both blessed with the assistance of our husbands too, which gave us some time to spend with Devon and her maids sans rugrats, getting our hair and makeup done and helping the bride.

Today's guest photographer was one of those bridesmaids. The fabulous Julie Summersgill, my new "sister-in-law once removed" as I've dubbed her. Julie did a great job of shooting all the behind the scenes wedding action at the McKenna/Summersgill nuptials. I on the other hand was too busy scrambling to get my children dressed, as well as myself, while not sweating (Shout out to my new best friend for formal events: Secret Clinical Strength Anti-perspirant!).

It wasn't easy. Especially the part where I had to chase Leah at top speed in full make-up and hair, while sporting a slightly tight bridesmaid's dress and heels, on concrete no less. But honestly I don't think I've smiled as much as I did last weekend in a very long time! It was truly a joyous occasion, and let's face it...Leah and Aislin definitely got into the spirit. They taught me that while most all Mothers approach a wedding day and their daughters' involvement in it with love and care, that approach varies a bit depending on whether your daughter is the bride or the flower girl. For example,

Mother of the Bride: Watches lovingly as her daughter and husband dance the father daughter dance.
Mother of the Flower Girl: Looks on in horror as her daughters and husband do the dance of "Try and stay still, don't bang on the glass! Here, you need some goldfish? NOOO! Not on your dress!!!!..." in the church's crying room during the ceremony.

Mother of the Bride: Acts as hostess and thanks guests for coming
Mother of the Flower Girl: Tries not to act shocked when she thanks guests for complimenting her child on their good behavior (Uum, were we watching the same child?!)

Mother of the Bride: Helps daughter pick out her dress and attends fittings
Mother of the Flower Girl: Helps daughter into her dress, usually with a struggle, and attends to any stains or damage (Got baby wipes?)

Mother of the Bride: Holds back tears of joy as her daughter says "I do"
Mother of the Flower Girl: Holds back a smile as her daughter asks the priest "Is that your friend Jesus?" (Yes, Leah really did that at the rehearsal. The priest seemed to get a kick out of it.)

That's just a smattering of responsibilites. Believe me, I'm not saying Mother's of the Bride have it easy. My Mom spilled champagne on her dress before we even left the house to go to the ceremony. But she did handle it with grace—a trait that most mothers of toddlers have to just learn to live without until their kids are at least 6 right?

Graceful or not...I had an amazing time. Leah truly enjoyed herself and her part in the wedding. I think Kathleen and Clare did too. Mark and Pete were tired, but ALWAYS manage to find the fun in any situation. Aislin was Aislin (read: TOTAL MOMMA'S GIRL!), but she does take a nice picture!!! Our family loved meeting Mike's family. And the happy couple reminded me why I love weddings so much...the hope that comes from witnessing two people's love and commitment to each other.

August Roundup!

Mmmm...Cupcake, I love you.
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Well, August has come and gone with nary a post from me. So sad. What can I say, we've been busy. We spent the first week preparing for two of our favorite visitors Auntie Mi-colle (better known as Nicolle) and Jim. We baked cupcakes in thier honor and I quickly learned that if you take a two year girl old to pick out cupcake supplies she will ALWAYS (and I mean ALWAYS) choose Funfetti Cake with Pink Vanilla Funfetti Frosting with sprinkles. Needless to say it was an extravaganza of pink deliciousness that day in our kitchen. Just look at the way Leah is "making eyes" at that puppy...as if to say "You, cupcake. My mouth, NOW!"

Our visit with Nic and Jim was great. We went to Dinosaur BBQ (with the kids!), and had a great night out at Alto Cinco (without kids!). We relaxed and Leah fell in love with Jim all over again. The guy is a kid MAGNET! Leah also tested the bedtime boundaries that have long been in place in our houshold (refusing to go to sleep, needing someone to lay down with her, screaming, crying, the list goes on...). I think a bit of it was due to the fact that she didn't want her days with our guests to end, but since thier depature things haven't changed to much. Sometimes leaving the door open helps, but other times she just saunters out to the top of the stairs and starts making her demands from there. For those situations we got a hook and eye latch for her door. That seems to have helped.

We hit the Adirondacks for the day with our guests before we left them in the Park for a few days of camping. I'll be sure to post a picture or two of Leah at Raquette Lake. She is a regular mermaid that girl. Give her water and she will swim. After that it was time to get ready for Auntie D's wedding. It was BEAUTIFUL. I am working of getting a picture to post here, but I'm in negotiations for permissions at present. Being Mother of the Bride is difficult I'm sure, but being Mother of a Flower Girl...that's no small task either my friends. I gotta give props to the Flower Dads too, Pete and Mark. I don't think I've ever seen either of them so tired before.

In a nutshell...there are additional August posts and pictures coming soon people. We've missed you and things are about to get more exciting. Leah starts school!

The Royal Cousins!!!

The Royal Cousins
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
We had a great weekend with Auntie K, Uncle Mark and today's guest cutie: CLARE!!!! As I'm sure you can see, the little ladies are a load of fun to be around. Clare is a little explorer...always checking everything out. She is also HI-LARIOUS!!!! Being around her made me realize that even though Leah is very, very, funny...she also has a pensive, bordering on serious, side to her. Clare is all giggles (or she's really upset...Can't make it seem like K gets off easy). At least she's all giggles to me. Being that I think Clare's Daddy is one of the funniest people I know, I started to wonder is humor hereditary?

Seriously, one glimpse of Clare dancing and you will be rolling on the ground. The girl has MOVES and she busts them with an intensity and self-assuredness that is nothing short of crazy! Maybe even "crazy whack funky!" Ten points or some video footage of Clare dancing to whover can name those lyrics...

Anyway, if you want to catch the little ladies in all their glory their next appearance will be as flower girls in Auntie D's wedding. I mean, wouldn't you want these princesses preceding you down the aisle people? Be forewarned, they will not be looking as "pinkalicious" (my new fave group on flickr!) as they do here. Trust me, they will be coiffed to perfection and from their angelic exteriors you will have NO IDEA what lurks beneath!!

This weekend we tore up the town looking for flower girl shoes (While Mark and Pete golfed), ate, hugged, and played our hearts out!! I'm a little concerned about Leah heading to her 2 yr old pre-school program in the fall. She was constantly asking Clare for kisses and hugs. I can just see her now lovingly assaulting other children with affection at school. But I guess that's what school and socialization is about right...she'll eventually learn what's appropriate and what isn't. PS-Nice farmer tan in this shot Leah!!

Clare is extra lovely becuase this weekend I caught her playing with both Leah and Aisy. My own two are just too far apart to play together at the moment. But it was adorable to see Clare playing with Aislin!!! It really warmed my heart. I needn't worry about Clare and Le getting along. They are such a hoot together at just 9 months apart! as Pete and Mark remarked...there is a whole lot of banging, screaming, and wild laughter when these two get together. I LOVE IT!!!!

Are you NOT kidding me?

Future Nerd
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
I am quickly learning the long standing rule of parenting: "Be careful what you say. It will come back to haunt you later." Now, much of what I say is relatively benign. I don't swear and I do my best to keep negative thoughts to myself. Children are sponges and I want mine to be happy KIDS. No sense in rushing them to adulthood with grownup cares and concerns. They'll have enough of their own later in life.

For me, the words that come back to haunt me are the little slangy phrases I've had with me since high school. Or Junior high school for that matter!! The ones that are so deeply embedded in my psyche I didn't even know they were there. That was until my patience was tested on a regular basis...

For some reason I am often surprised by my children's sometimes less than desirable behavior. I know they're a toddler and baby at the moment and that childlike behavior is what can be expected of them. But that doesn't mean I'm not caught off guard when I walk into a room to find Aislin eating one of our most useful medical reference books or stumble upon Leah about to stick a Leatherman tool into an electrical outlet. It is times like these when I just instictively blurt out "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!!!!"

I've noticed I say this mostly when it comes to safety issues. Like..."Are you kidding me...Are you looking to get that cat to scratch you? Do you want to hurt/mame/kill yourself? Poop paper for a week? Or poop nothing when the paper backs you up endlessly?" I'm sure you get the idea. Kind of like when Elaine on Seinfeld says "SHUT UP!!!" but without the pushing...

Like I said, pretty unoffensive stuff (thankfully!) but it still doesn't make it any easier to swallow now that my two year old has adopted this exclamation as her own. In true Leah like fashion..she has added her own special toddler twist. Now, when I ask her to do something that she'd rather not do, or dole out discipline when she's done something wrong...Little Miss Back Talk says "ARE YOU NOT KIDDING ME?!?!?!!"

Needless to say, I've been trying to curb my own use of the term. Nothing like hearing your own words thrown right back at ya, to make you want to take your vocabulary and colloquialisms in a whole different direction! Luckily, Leah's still patchy grasp of the English language (albiet excellent for her age!) allows me the fortuitous ability to respond with "Yes, Leah....I am indeed NOT kidding you!!!!" I guess I'm ok for now. I'm not sure what's going to happen when she starts getting even smarter. Yikes!!!

The Shredder

The Shredder
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Yeah..."the shredder" that's Leah's new nickname. It goes perfectly with one of the many nicknames Pete has already given Aisy: "the crusher." Both names fit each girl to a tee!

You know, I used to chuckle (dare I say laugh!) at the "mess" pictures I used to see parents post on flickr. "Oooops!! Johnny spread shaving cream all over our bathroom!!" or "Yikes! I spent hours defuming my bedroom after "perfumepalooza '05!" I'll tell ya, it's not so funny when it happens to you. And lately it has been happening more than I ever expected.

First I go up to retrieve Leah from her nap a few weeks ago, only to find her relaxing on MY bed and rubbing hand cream onto her hands ("Hi Mommy!"). I must admit, I did crack a smile at this one (I turned away so she wouldn't see though!) to which Leah responded "It's kinda funny isn't it?" The stinker. As our friend Nicolle said after I relayed this story to her... "She's totally her father's child, huh?"

Next up was the party in my office. Yup...that's my angel...trashing my home studio with the same gusto Johnny Depp reserved for trashing hotel rooms back in the day. It went like this (just in case any future toddler extremists are looking for instuctions on perpetrating their own little homegrown plots)...

1) Throw tantrum at Mom's desk.
2) Scream "but I haaaave to email somebody!!!" and bang on computer keyboard (that's keyboard number 3 this month!) as Mom calmly removes you from the desk chair.
3) Kick and scream wildly so that MOM knocks over her overly full shredder
**Extra points here becuase it really gets to the parents when they feel like they "did it to themselves."**
4) Oh Yeah...**VERY IMPORTANT*...do this all while Mom is on the phone and holding your younger sibling.
5) Take toppled shredder paper (Note: shredder has a safety mechanism that shuts shredder off when toppled. No two year olds were harmed in the making of this catastrophe.) and CELBRATE.
6) Giggle, dance, jump, laugh, and scream "It's a PAAAARTY!!!!!" at the top of your lungs.

At this point Mom will mostly likely be struck dumb. Thankfully, this Mom was on the phone with my friend and business cohort Jen. Who said something to the effect of "let her have fun with it. It will buy you a few minutes of peace and help keep you sane." Which it did. Seeing Leah play in that great big mess also made me laugh...which just goes to show that even when it's happining to you it can be funny and not funny at the same time.

PS- that's an invitastion sample Leah is attempting to rip open there. What can I say...Leah loves Jen's cookies. And perhaps my designs as well? I drew the line there though and that cookie was subsequently ripped away from her as I rolled out the vacuum to clean up. It was quite the chore, the vacuum clogged and had to be cleaned out no less than 3 times. Even so, I think Aislin is still trying to eat whatever paper shreds she can find.

Much to my delight Leah hid under the table while I cleaned as much of the mess as I could (seriously...Pete had to finish the job later when he got home. IT was THAT bad!). Leah and the Eureka WhirlWind Litespeed are NOT friends, so that was almost punishment enough right there. In the end, it made for a funny picture...that yes, went up on flicker. And an even funnier memory that I won't soon forget. Note to self: empty shredder often. It's for your own good!!!

My youngest girl, my darling babe,
who's sunshiny demeanor has equal parts shade...

Any fan of this blog knows you came with some colic
But you're happier now. You can crawl...even frolic!
You are quick with a cuddle and you love a good squeeze
and now at 9 months you're a bit of a tease!

You and your sister can sure drive me nuts
You pull on her hair and she gives you head butts.
Kisses and hugs bring you back down to earth..
Where Daddy can marvel at your thighs and their girth.

Your eyes have a sparkle unique just to you
The color, a brown-blueish, green-grayish hue.
They're hard to describe. Just like you little girl.
You are tough, but so delicate...like a genuine pearl.

When you're older I'll miss the baby you've been
even the gas and the rashy skin.
I'm a shutterbug now so I'll have memories some day
of pretend picnics, your expressions, and the games that we play.

I'll never get tired of hearing you giggle.
I'm in love with the way that you stand, bounce and wiggle.
I'll forever remember Leah asking "hold her?"
or your look of wonder at hearing Lem purrrrr...

So special are you that you match perfectly
with our crazy happy little family
What other baby could rock a nickname like "Garber?"
Don't ask how you got it, it was all your father...

Aislin we love your bad little self
plump autumn pumpkin, to Leah's winter elf.
One poem can't say all I treasure about you...
my glorious, loving, sweet number two!

But are the Twos so Terrible?

Bubble Joy
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Yes, they are terrible but as this picture shows, they are also terrific! The girls' Pediatrician calls them that, the "Terrific Twos." I won't tell you what he called the Fours....let's just say I'm not looking forward to that!

Anyway, I just wanted to share this shot of my little two year old tyrant in all her glory. The pure joy Leah is expressing in this shot makes my heart want to burst. She was "doing ballet" and as a dancer and ballerina (in my younger years) it brings me so much joy to see her leap and twirl with confidence and abandon.

Even though she is "having a hard time" (her words!!) lately, I see glimpses of the pre-schooler Leah is becoming. She's got a sense of humor (is it possible for a two and a half year old to have a dry wit?). She's very independent. And for all of her defiance, she's even a bit of a people pleaser at times! The girl wants to be good, I can really see it...but at two it's just too tough sometimes. Besides, even if I am tired and aggravated with some of her behavior...I am also comforted by the fact that she's testing limits and trying new things. It's all part of learning who she is right?

Aislin took a nap this morning and it afforded Leah and I some time alone together. Wow, what a difference it made in Leah's demeanor! She was so excited to play with Mommy and get some personal attention. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. When Aisy woke up the typical two year-old war of wills started up again, but at least it made me realize that much of her behavior is a result of some sibling jealousy...along with the par the course toddler boundary testing mentioned above. No longer is Aislin just a cute, crying, lump Leah has to manuever around. Now she's a totally adorable smiling, giggling, climbing, crawling and standing machine to be reckined with.

I have a feeling once Aislin gets a little older these two will be happy to dance through the bubbles together. And honestly...I can't wait for that! Until then...I'll just enjoy each of them wfor who they are in this very moment.

Squishy Face and Disney Place

Not every baby likes bubbles
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
Thanks to the over the top sales technique of a Disney store clerk, as of Friday I am now the proud owner of a Fairytopia bubble machine. Note to stores where chidren's products are sold: when you see me trying to calm my out of control tantruming child with $1.99 Little Mermaid flip-flops as I desperately try to check out DO NOT ASK ME "Have you seen our new --insert totally useless product here-- on sale for only $5.99 today?"

The answer (in this case and almost every other)...is NO, I had not seen or heard about the "baby crack"...I mean, bubble machine, you are peddling overly perky college girl! I'm sorry but all I heard were the gut-wrenching screams of my two year old relentlessly begging me for a $3.99 ball that I KNOW with complete certainty my cat or 9 month old will get hold of and eat. BUT somehow, when you did your little sales pitch, MY CHILD HEARD YOU!!! But then you knew that would happen didn't you Disney clerk...

Now instead of screaming about the ball, Leah's pitching a fit for the bubble machine. I mean a taking her shoes off, full-on tears, nonsensical fit of true toddler proportions.Touché Betsy, future Disney Store employee of the month, you have bested me with your superior understanding of retail marketing. To show that I am graceful in the face of defeat, I will now throw all my parenting principals to the wind and buy the stupid thing (just as I told my friend Jen I was swearing off all toys until Christmas!). I will buy it because I'm REALLY tired (a 9 mo old and a terrible two will totally do that to you!). I will buy it because I need the crying to stop, and lets face it...it IS only $5.99 and Leah really does LOVE bubbles.

Besides, I had been thinking about getting one....millions of bubbles and none of that pesky blowing...and I needed something I could bribe Leah with so she'd take a nap. To my credit, I did ask Betsy if it came with batteries before I made the purchase. I think she could tell my impulse buy was dependent upon this one factor since she immediately responded "Yes!! I mean I think so! Don't kill me if it doesn't..." Needless to say, she was wrong. After an hour of searching every toy in our house for C batteries I finally told Leah she would have to wait until Daddy got home with some for the bubble extravanganza. Thanks for making me look bad Betsy. I promise the kid she gets bubbles if she takes her nap and then I can't deliver! Oh well...note to self: confirm if batteries are included yourself next time Erin.

And so my happy trip to the Disney store for a much needed $14.99 toddler nightgown ended with me spending $25 and cursing the fact that I even ventured into the Mall with the girls. After the bubble machine, she had a freak out about not being able to go on the carousel. Does it ever end? The things we do for our kids. Our whole trip was for Leah anyway. There is a hand-me-down Disney Tinkerbell nightgown from the Herrera girls that Leah is SOOOOO in love with, I'm afraid she's going to wear the poor thing out! The good news is, she loves that nightgown and her new princess one so much that she even wants to wear them for nap (or should I say "quiet time," that seems to fool Leah a bit), the same nap she was trying to get out of just a week or so ago...

Anyway, here's a picture of the little one with the fruit of our bubble labor. See it was all worth it wasn't it? I have even better ones of Leah. Fully-automated bubble machine means Mommy's hands are free for more camera snapping. The bubbles kept popping on her face arms and legs, hence the little squished up expression. Actually she makes this face all the time with "sniffing" sound effects. Completely adorable. They're all adorable when they're not tantruming right?

I call him Grandpa and my girls call him Grandpa Joe, or Great Grandpa Joe (...if Leah is really feeling like adding some flair). If being a grandparent is one of life's greatest joys, then I can only imagine what it's like being a great grandparent! Grandpa LOVES these little girls (as well as his three other great grandchildren, my niece Clare, and my cousin Jeff's kids Owen and Linnea). He has a special gift for making Aisy smile and Leah loves all his songs, jokes and tricks. Leah also loves to play with his cane, hat, or whatever else he'll let her get hold of. And even when Leah is being at her most mischevious and dramatic (that's my nice way of saying a big, crabby, pain-in-the-behind!!), Grandpa Joe thinks she's hilarious. That must be the gift of the greatgrandparent...the ability to say "Now isn't she cute!" when her parents are thinking "Is she being defiant or what?!" I love this shot of Grandpa with my mom and Aisy. Grandpa's smile brightens my day and I think the girls' smiles do the same for him!

Strawberry Fields Forever

Strawberry picking
This morning I took the girls strawberry picking at Critz Farms in Caz. Leah had a great time and as expected, ate more than I think she picked! Aisy was in the Bjorn with her sun hat and new sunscreen for the SUPER SENSITIVE!!! It's called Blue Lizard and while it's expensive, I have to say we really like it. I tried to skate by without plunking down the cash for it. I figured I'd just use the Water Babies I've always used on Leah on Aislin too. But after the hives, the pediatrician pretty much served up the smack down on that (we're not even using soap or cleanser on Aisy for the time being) so Blue Lizard it is. And I have to say it hasn't bothered Aisy (or me, or Leah...) one bit!!

The BerriesStrawberry Girl
As you can probably tell from the pictures we had a BLAST indulging in one of summertime's most wonderful activities. Leah was a great picker and knew just which ones were ripe enough to pick and eat. There were boat loads of berries in the field and even though many were on the small side, I swear...I have never had a sweeter or better tasting strawberry in my life!!! They were delicious. I took lots of pictures and even though it was a long ride, I think everyone agreed it was worth it. I was so excited to eat some when w got home that I had bran flakes with strawberries and vanilla soy milk for lunch. Mmmm....

Next crop up is Leah's FAVORITE!!! BLUBERRIES!!! They sprout up mid-July and you can bet we'll be there to pick some more for ourselves!!! YUM!!!!

Besides the all-over hives and several gnarly face breakouts that come and go at random, Aislin's also been dealing with a seemingly unrelated case of constipation and spitting up. Probably more than you needed to know. The worse part is we have no idea what is causing this reaction. We just have to wait and see and try and get the hives under control with Benadryl. All in all the girl is sort of a big ol' messy mess (you know what I'm talkin' 'bout Laurie Berkner fans!).

Throw in our neighborhood's annual art show (I help with planning and show my art at it), as well as work for several clients, father's day, etc. etc. and you've got one tired Mommy. Not to be outdone...Pete has been really giving work and family life his all lately. Props to Daddy on Father's Day for that!

Pete is such an AWESOME Dad!!! This shot is for him. I know that nothing makes him happier than loving these girls and sharing them with the world. Anyone who's ran into him while he's got Aislin in the Bjorn has probably been asked "Have you squeezed her thighs? C'mon!! Squeeze 'em. They're super chubby! You don't know what you're missing!!!" If you've not been asked then you are probably one of the people who's been asked to delight in the olfactory honor of smelling Aislin's head. "Doesn't she smell spicy? I LOVE IT! It's the best smell!" As our friend Nicolle said to me..."Pete just wants everyone to get the full sensory experience that are his children." Even if it might seem strange to those who don't know him, to those of us that do it's a joy to see Pete so joyful!!! I'm just glad he parents my girls with such enthusiasm and delight.

Happy Father's Day Pete! Get better soon Aislin! And Leah...let's just try to get through "terrific twos" in one piece ok babe? I'll write more soon!!!!

A quick one...

I recently got a request for more Aisy pics from my friend Cyn. She loves Leah, but she also has a point. Aisy's cuteness can no longer be contained! We need to set it free and share it with the world! As a Mom, I'm always hesitant to say "How cute is this baby?!?!?" Even if I do think it...oh, I don't know...ALL THE TIME!! I just never want to be one of those Moms in denial who thinks their kid's diaper doesn't stink.

I always joke that..."God made 'em cute so we don't kill 'em" on those really, really, really tough days. During the colicky days, the toddler tantrum days, and the middle of the night crying benders. Now, I don't have any theories on the teenage years...those seem tough and decidedly un-cute!!! I guess I'm on my own there. But back to babies being super cute (especially Aisy). I also think that parental ability to see that cuteness through all the tears, screaming, and insanity is a coping mechanism you are blessed with when you first hold that baby in your arms. Now I sometimes think my girls are at their cutest, when they are being truly un-cute. Like Leah splashing me from the tub when I just got cozy in my pjs, or asking me to go to time out after kicking me (hard!!) because she knows...she just knows....). So maybe in some ways I am in denial... :)

Alright...both my cuties are napping!!!! WOW! For once!!! Is there anything cuter than a sleeping baby? As a result, I better go work! Enjoy Cyn!!!

Postscript, 3:37 pm: Aislin woke up 2 minutes after I finished writing this. Not cute.

My Baby Prune

I control the spoon!
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner
When I was a little girl, my Dad used sing a song about a baby prune after our baths. I think it's a boy-scout ditty..."a baby prune is like her Dad, but she's not wrinkled half so bad. No matter how young a prune may be she's always getting wrinkly!" Now I sing the prune song to my girls at bath time, but these days prunes have infiltrated more than just our musical selections. They are an integral part of Aisy's diet!! Bathroom problems begone! And I'm pleased to say, this baby doesn't mind a bit!

I overheard Pete sharing one of my favorite descriptions of Aislin with his Mom on the phone lastnight—"She never met a food she didn't like!!!" It's so true! Aislin has not rejected a single food we've given to her. She sucks down peas, mixed veggies, green beans and prunes with the same gusto as she does peaches, cinnamon raisin granola (I know...how fancy has Stage 2 baby food gotten?!), apples and bluberries. She's an equal opportunity eater! As always I'm prepared for that to change one day, but I'm still encouraged by this nice, open-minded start on her part.

That's not to say that her body agrees with all of her tastebuds' decions. Her tummy was noticably unpleased with rice cereal for one! And her system still takes ages to process things it seems. But, we've managed to come up with a solution for the time being...PRUNES!!! She gets a bit everyday and I have to say it has helped a great deal.

Let's hope this issue resolves itself sometime before she hits toddler age. I'd have to buy stock in Sunsweet!! And besides that I'm trying to envision getting a preschooler to eat an actual prune. I guess there's always grapes and raisins right? Fiber is Aislin's friend. Have a great holiday weekend everyone. Leah and Aisy say "Bon Apetit! Nobody likes a good BBQ better than us!!!" Enjoy...

Things I love about the little one....

observant

Here's a tiny tribute to Aisy. I feel I've been slacking on keeping record on her babyhood the way I did Leah. Oh well...I guess that's just the way it is with kids who are not firstborns. Still I love this little one in a way I could love no one else. Just as there is for Leah, there is a special love reserved just for Aislin. These are the Top 10 things I love so much about this baby:

1) The way she rolls. This kid is seriously mobile these days. No, she's not crawling yet but the girl could roll her way to whatever she wants. I get a particular kick out of when she gets to a wall, piece of furniture, or any other dead end. She keeps on trying to roll over it with sheer determination. Think a "roomba" stuck in the corner. Eventually she decides to backtrack and roll the other way, but believe me...she's not happy about it!

2) Her eyebrows. Just look at this shot (the "neat" brow is pictured. The other has a cowlick). Need I say more?

3) The noises she makes. This childs cooing is honestly like music to my ears. Her throaty giggle delights me. I could listen to her all day long. I'm actually considering taping her for when she's grown out of it, so I can always remember. So sweet.

4) Her X-treme attachment to me. Alright, I have love-hate feelings about this one. Sometimes her neediness (and choosiness about wh she will go to) makes me feel a little like I'm being manipulated. It can be pretty taxing and exhausting too. But when someone hands her to me or I go to pick her up and she immediately stops crying, there is a truly magnetic connection there. It is ultimately rewarding and such an honor for me to be of comfort to her.

5) Her girth. When this kid bounces in the excersaucer she actually sounds like she's going to bring the house down. It's banging, thudding, rattling and squeaking, as I write! I love having a chubby, cuddly, baby. Her thunder-thighs are glorious. There is nothing like' em!

6) Her eyes. Leah's eyes are special for so many reasons. I think I practically wrote sonnets in previous blog entries! But Aisy's are special too. What I love about her eyes is the way they "smile!" When she's happy Aislin transmits so much delight with her eyes.

7) Her love for Leah (AKA big sister). Aislin looks at Leah with such adoration. Leah makes her "baby" or "sissy" laugh like no one else. And while she may not always show it (see number 8) Leah also adores her sister. It almost makes me cry when Leah holds Aisy's hand and says "She's my friend."

8) And...Her patience with Leah. Aislin puts up with lots of "Chookie, Cookie, Choo!!!" That's what Leah says while she "tickles" (read: roughly scratches) the baby. Mostly there are near misses (Pete and I always try to be right there), but Aislin has has taken her fair share of blows from her sister. It's just the two year old in Leah, but Aisy really takes it all in stride.

9) The way she rubs her cold chubby cheek up against mine when she's sitting on my lap. She reaches up with her right arm and strokes my face and then does her little cheek rubbing thing. I love it.

10) The way she fits into our family. Pete and I knew we would have enough love for a second child, but we didn't know how she'd fit in exactly. Everything seemed great before she arrived. I'm glad we didn't spend much time dwelling on that silliness, because the second she was born, her place was made. Aislin compliments our big girl perfectly. She brings out humor in me I didn't know I had! She challenges her parents and has proven to us that we can rise to the occasion! I look forward to what she has planned for our future!

Workin'

Workin'
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner.
Sorry kids, I've been sooooo busy with work that it has been tough to find even a moment to blog (or to balance my quickbooks, clean my house or let's face it...shower!). What can I say...wedding invitation season is in full swing! The girlies have me busy too. Leah wants to get out of the house every chance she can get. I don't mind. More time out seems to correlate directly to less "time outs" for the little Miss. So field trips to the library, farmer's market, park or post office are more than welcome. They also mean fewer requests for "MORE TV!!!" I hate the TV these days. If only we lived in a warmer climate where we could be outside more. Then Leah could have her own outdoor adventures, instead of wanting to be a Backyardigan.

As you can see, Leah has a fine idea of what it means to be a working women. She wanted her own "office" the other day. So I set this up. "Um Ms. Leah? I've got Cookie Monster, VP of Chocolate Chip Manufacturing for Sesame Street on line two for you..." Don't you love how her behind still easily fit in the bumbo seat I have on loan from my friend Sarah for Aisy? I think she actually likes it better than the baby does!! Alright, kids beckon...I better go. This one was for Auntie K who needed a picture of her girls. I'll get an Aislin one up soon K!!! Leah will see you now....please have a seat in her office...

Have your cake...(and listen to music too!!)

Tree of Life Cake
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner.
Last week was Pete's birthday. Don't you love the Frank Lloyd Wright birthday cake my friend Jen made for him? It is designed to look just like a "tree of life" window from one of Pete's favorite FLW constructions—the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo. I could write on and on about how good it was. It was made in my favorite of Jen's signature flavors...Sour Cream Almond Cake with Raspberry Citrus Schnapps® Syrup and Raspberry Preserves!!!

Mmmmm...I know it was his cake, but the second he said "I want white cake" I jumped at the chance to get a taste of my favorite flavor in there. Notice Leah's little fingers in the lower left hand corner of the shot? The punk couldn't keep her grubby hands away from the cake!! It was so delicious and Jen did such a great job.

Speaking of punks...I have really been enjoying my ipod lately. Especially when it's not playing Dora, Blue or the kiddie band Milkshake (they have a couple good songs I must admit...). I love music. But my passion is matched and more often exceeded by Pete's love of music. He has taught me so much!!! Here's a bit of what's frequently playing on my itunes these days:

Lowdown by My Morning Jacket
Possibly the puuurtiest song ever! I love me some alt-country twang!

Kissing the Lipless by The Shins
Can't say enough about how creative these guys are. They grow on ya.

Evil by Interpol
I confess, I first heard it on an old Grey's Anatomy episode and had to have it.

Phantom Punch by Sondre Lerche
I think I might move to Norway for this guy. Super upbeat and rockin' at the same time. Aisy loves to dance around to this one. Very Euro-groovy...

Those are 4 faves right now. My collection also includes some cheese (Sorry, but I love "Leave (get out)" by jojo!!! I know...I'm terrible!!!), lots of 80's and 90's pop and alternative, some rap/hip-hop (Nelly was the only thing that could get Leah through those newborn crying jags!), some folk music, dance music and more. Lucky for me Pete owns mountains of electronica, brit-pop, psychedelica, shoegazer, and the list goes on. Old stuff! New stuff! There will always be something for these girls to listen to at our house. He also has lots of hardcare, metal, and the like. Not my bag,,,but I still love him anyway, Thanks for being the music in the nowak girls' lives Pete!!

My girl wants to party all the time...

I want tea!
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner.
That is...if by partying I mean, howl all night with the blood-curdling scream of 10,000 banshees!!! Our happy, sleeping-through-the-night (for the most part) Aisy has decided to abandon all the sleep skils she's aquired over the past 6 months, in favor of gut-wrenching cries and heart-breaking (but loud) whimpers. Pete and I are tired. Really tired. I won't bore you with the details except to say that Leah similarly started experiencing night-wakings at around 6 months. Still, it was never this tough.

Leah was willful. It took Pete and I about 3 or 4 months to break her of waking up at night to nurse (trust me the child was not hungry...just social!). Aislin has a spirit of steel!!! Lay her in the crib and the kid springs awake!!!! I'm fearful of what life will be like in a few weeks when she can bring herself to sitting. We handled Leah's night-snacking urges by having Pete be the one to go in and soothe her. Aislin is such a Mama's girl, she screams her Daddy right into the ground. The girl is relentless!!

There are many things it could be. Teeth! Aislin just cut her first last week. Environment! It's staying lighter longer. But most importantly there's Aisy's old nemesis from early infancy: Digestive problems!!! Solid foods have brought on back-end trouble for our girl I think. If only it were as easy as giving her a cup of tea to settle her stomach (I love this picture of Aislin with her Grandma Nowak by the way). But it isn't that easy. What it is is a constant guessing game. Gripe Water? Mylecon? Less food or more food? Rice cereal or oatmeal? Cry it out or nurse-on-demand all night? As for that last question...neither one really suits my parenting style.

I know this is a story many of you know well. Perhaps you're even experiencing it right now yourself. Sleep training is hard. Nap training is even harder (in my humble opinion). Currently, my child wants no part of either activity. Eventually I know she'll get there. Let's hope she's not 36 years old and still waking for feddings, unless it's to feed her children! Tips are always welcome. Me and the birthday boy (that's Pete!!) thank you. More on his B-day just as soon as I get the chance. Leah and I surprised him at the office with a cake from my friend Jen!!! Maybe will have so much fun partying for her Daddy's b-day this evening that she'll forget to cry her brains out tonight?!? Wishful thinking Mommy...

Sometimes it snows in April...

Holding a butterfly
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner.
Anyone who knows the lyrics to that Prince song, also knows that the next line is "Sometimes I feel so bad." I'm not usually sensitive to the weather, but this Spring has me pretty darn close to crying! I can't take it anymore. PLEASE...make it stop SNOWING!

To escape from the cold this weekend we headed to Rochester's Strong National Museum of Play. And boy, did we have a BLAST! Leah loved every minute of it and Aislin was pretty happy to be out and about too. Give that girl a full tummy and stick her in the Baby Bjorn and she is good to go! One of the coolest attractions at the Strong Museum (besides the fully-functioning, child-sized Wegmans and the almost complete replica of Sesame Street!) is the Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden.

I can't even explain the joy I felt watching Leah experience all that was going on around her! She was in awe of the butterflies and at the same time acted as if she was one of them—beautiful and carefree. It was amazing when one of the guides helped her hold a live butterfly in her hand. I was so happy we managed to grab a shot of it! I took a ton of other pictures, including some butterfly macros and a few prize catches of Leah mid-play from around the museum. The snow may have me down, but memories from our museum trip should have me smiling for a while...

The laundry list...

Laundry Day
Originally uploaded by epmdesigner.
As a single woman living in Chicago I used to (dare I say it?) actually enjoy doing laundry. I'd wake up early on a Saturday, before the rest of my apartment building was up, head down to the laundry room and throw a load on. One Einstien Bros. Bagel and a Starbucks Grande Mocha later, I'd stroll back to my apartment and put everything in the dryer.

Then, I'd relax in my apartment checking out the concert listings in the Chicago Reader and deciding which cultural events I'd like to attend that weekend. I use the term "cultural" loosely since Old St. Pat's and GermanFest are just as much "cultural events" in my book as say First Fridays at the Museum of Contemporary Art. After that, it was usually time to get my stuff and start folding. Seriously, I'd be done with the entire task by 11 am—latest. I'd have the entire day in front of me. Lunch with friends? Sure! A cubs game? I'm there! Shopping on Michigan Ave.? Do you even need to ask?

Well...as I've said many times before on this blog: things are different now. And while I do miss aspects of my former life at times, I wouldn't trade my current one for anything! Not even a lifetime supply of All Free and Clear laundry detergent. And believe me...when you have 2 little girls with serious eczema that unscented, dye-free stuff is akin to liquid gold!

There are perks to my current laundry situation. I don't have to smush onto the elevator with my smelly over-flowing basket and crowd some nice elderly couple into the corner. I no longer need to hoard quarters or deal with 15 random laundry cards each with 18¢ left on it. There are no homeless people camped out just trying to find a safe place to get out of the cold. And I can take my time getting laundry done without the worry of disgruntled neighbors taking my stuff out of the washer or dryer (a hassle I rarely had to deal with anyway...as the early bird gets the empty laundry room!).

BUT...perks aside laundry has now become my life. Gone are the days where once a week was enough! As I'm sure many of you know 4 people make A LOT of laundry. I don't know how people do laundry for 5, 6, 8 or more people! And when 2 of those people are babies...forget about it! My friend Sue told me yesterday that she swore her 3rd kid came with laundry retroactive to conception!

Thank god Fran has mercy on me when she's here sitting the kids on Tuesdays. She has the magical ability to get laundry done way faster and better than I ever could. Still, there is so much to be done and I'd say the weakest of my laundry skills is getting it all put back in the correct person's closet or dresser. I often feel overwhelmed. Not by the chore or drudgery of doing laundry (that's still sort of fun for me), but by the sheer amount of clothes that need to be put away! Sometimes I think I'd just rather admire that basket full of toasty warm folded clothes, sheets and towels. I get an oddly satisfying feeling from it.

Which brings me to this picture (and the end of my laundry rant/ramble). Even though children make for WAY more laundry and a constant need to buy more stain remover (I knew we shouldn't have given Leah spaghetti while she was still in her Easter dress!), they do make the jobs of folding and sorting a lot more fun! Leah likes to jump in the piles of clothes like they're fall leaves. And as the photo illustrates, I left Aisy near some freshly washed shirts only to find her laying like this when I returned from the kitchen. I had to grab the camera. Besides...Pete can always run out during the rinse cycle and grab me that starbucks grande mocha if I still need it!
